Do Your Dogs Like Blueberries?

Davinia and Indiana love Blueberries. They like them fresh but they love them in muffins or cookies especially if there is cinnamon in there too. They also like them frozen but they seem to play with them more then eat them when they are. Unfortunately blueberries are just really expensive most of the time especially when you live somewhere where you can’t grow them. I am sure most of you would agree that sometimes the price is just cost prohibitive even if they have such amazing health benefits for ourselves and our dogs we just have to pass.

But what if we could grow them in the yard. Well maybe I can’t grow them in my yard it is just too hot and the company says they are primarily outdoor plants and don’t do as well inside. But grandma and grandpa live in the right climate and certainly could grow them in their yard at the new house in fact most people can grow them at home in their yard and have blueberries all summer long for breakfast, in salads, as dessert and as a very healthy treat for the dog. I know I would try my hand at growing them if I could.

By sending the plants to my parents as a gift the girls would benefit whenever we go visit grandpa will make them blueberry muffins. I wonder if the girls will try to eat the berries right off the plant when we go to visit? I know they will eat them off the ground if they fall off of the plant and that some dogs will eat them off the plant. If they do and have blue faces from the juice I promise to take a picture and post it for all of you.

So with all of that in mind I decided that I would send my dad blueberry plants for Father’s Day . My parents will have fresh delicious blueberries for years to come (that is if they can keep the wildlife away long enough to get any). I asked him the other day if he would like to grow them in his yard and he said yes without hesitation so its a done deal he just didn’t know why I asked him.

Some information about these plants

How long until the blueberry plants bear fruit?
They will likely bear a light crop this season, a lot more next season and an even heavier crop during the third season and beyond.

How tall do they grow and how much overall space do they need to grow?

Plants will grow to six feet high by five feet wide. They can be pruned to a more compact size.

How much sun and water do they need?
They prefer full sun and watering whenever the soil feels dry until they are well-established (usually after a year of growth). Mulching around the plants helps conserve moisture.

  1. My dog would eat the muffins if there were rocks in them. I do not think it’s the blueberries that is attracting your dogs to the muffins. When we were in the heat of the Bahamas, and I was trying to get Nelson to drink more, one of the ways you suggested to get him to drink was to put blueberries in the water. Guess what? He looked at me like I was crazy and turned up his nose at them. No bb’s for my dog.

    • They are an added benefit. While Indiana would eat rocks if she could Davinia is much pickier.
Hope you figured out a way to get more water into your baby.

My Chihuahua has the strangest addiction to blueberry muffins. He will eat the bite-sized cinnamon muffins, donut holes, or lemon muffins but ONLY if I break them each up into about 10 pieces. If I don’t, he will either go bury them under a blanket or sit and look at me and whine until I take the food from his mouth and break it up for him. If any of his food isn’t the size of a piece of kitten food, he will not eat. Period. Even if i give him tender boiled chicken or beef, he will starve unless I make the food pea sized. The one and ONLY exception to this is that if he even sees me with or hears me open a bag of bite-sized blueberry muffins, he will act like a crazed drug addict whining and trying to get the muffin from my hand or mouth. If I do give him one, he tries to swallow it whole and all but chokes himself on it. I have 5 other dogs and they seem to enjoy them almost as much. I have raised dogs for over 25 years and I have never seen such a weird craving for food. I could understand if we were talking about some beefy treat, but blueberries? And again, it is NOT the muffins as they don’t go berserk over other flavors of muffin. Oh the joys of super spoiled doggies! Gotta love them!
