Davinia and Indiana were apartment dogs for several years before we moved into a house. Space was tight in our first apartment but we made it work. Even when Indiana was a little puppy and needed a lay and potty area because she couldn’t go out to potty without her 16 week vaccinations so she had a play and potty area inside. As the years went on we moved into progressively bigger places and space for them became a non issue – they have basically taken over the entire house at this point. I think they need a special room or at least some organizing of their things again. Apartment Guide has tips for owning and caring for your pet whether you are in a large or small space. It’s helpful information no matter where you live so I think we are going to have to check it out.
I was asked earlier this week by Apartment Guide if I thought Davinia and Indiana could use a living space Make Over and I of course said yes. I looked at several options dog run and dog kennels so they could play outside without always having to be on leashes but that was mulitple times the budget we were given. I realized I would have to think smaller and indoors. They were given a crate set with bumpers and pillow which got stained during our flea infestation and since I have been able to keep them flea free its time for some new bedding.
I also think they would like to have a crate cover for when we travel so I don’t have to put a hotel towel over their crate when I step out of the room for a minute. Plus they will be able to stay more comfortable in the car for the drive. I thought I found the perfect set but the bumper comes up to high (Davinia likes to rest her head on the bumper like a pillow). A well furnished crate would look much better no matter where I put it in the house and who knows might be the start to a dedicated dog room or dog area when we do finally move. We are going to have to keep looking until I find the perfect set because I want it to last. Feel free to leave your recommendations in the comment section if you know of someone who makes them or a company for us to contact.
Just because we aren’t moving right now doesn’t mean that we don’t have readers who are or who are first time pet parents that need to figure out how to make their space work with their new pet. If you’re ready for a whole new space or are looking to move, Apartment Guide has the photos, floor plans, features and tips to help you find the perfect pet friendly apartment community. You can narrow your search to display communities that allow pets.
Whether you have a new home or a new pet, Apartment Guide provides some great ideas for how to keep your furry friend safe in your space: http://moving.apartmentguide.com/living-with-pets/pet-proofing-your-apartment/?WT.mc_id=9720 Are you getting a new pet or moving to a new home? Apartment Guide has some tips on how to introduce your four-legged friend to your space so they feel right at home by de-cluttering your space http://moving.apartmentguide.com/settling-in/how-to-declutter-your-apartment/?WT.mc_id=9720
Every new community you live in has its own set of dog rules some of which are followed and some of which are not and some that are so foreign to you like when we lived in Hong Kong and in the city we had to carry a water bottle with us to wash their pee pee away along with scooping the poop. Thank goodness when we moved into permanent housing we didn’t have to do that anymore and the girls had a park right in front of our flat to play in. If you have been able to keep your dog in your backyard in the past and are now moving to an apartment or an area where you can walk your dog its best to brush up on the rules and review Apartment Guide’s reminders about pet etiquette first: http://moving.apartmentguide.com/living-with-pets/how-to-walk-a-dog-in-your-apartment-community/?WT.mc_id=9720

I would love to be able to give my cat some of the outdoors indoors. She spends time on our balcony when we are home, but when we’re not she’s always getting into house plants (or my nail care kit- who knows why?). I would like to be able to buy some cat grass and cat nip plants and have them in an indoor (dirt free) setting for her to munch and roll in while we’re away. And maybe get her some more crinkle balls to horde while she’s high on cat nip. 😉 Anything to keep her from opening drawers (yes, for real) and chewing up my nail buffers!
GFC Follower, and I would like a new bed (w/o holes) for my fur-baby 🙂
I would like to add some sort of awning/covered area in the backyard for the dogs. @ of mine don’t mind weather, but the other 2 do so it would be great to have someplace for them to go while waiting for the other 2 to finish up.
