Do You Know Where Your Veterinarian Went to School?

US News and World Report just released the list of Top Veterinary Schools in the country. Have you ever considered where in the rankings the school your veterinarian went to falls? With so few Veterinary schools in the country to start with and veterinary schools harder to get into then law school or medical school combined you can be sure that not only is your veterinarian smart (at least book smart) but they had a desire and a drive to work with animals.

No matter what school your Veterinarian went to you would hope they didn’t graduate last in their class so in that respect someone who barely graduated from Cornell might not be your first choice over someone who graduated top of their class from another school.

What are some things to take into consideration when looking at where your veterinarian went to school? All of the Veterinary Schools have small animal programs. Small Animal programs concentrate on dogs and cats in fact no matter which program the veterinarian ultimately wants to specialize in they start with their graduating class dealing with small animal. If lets say your veterinarian specializes in hearts or orthopedic work or also sees Exotic Animals (birds, bunnies, hedgehogs, etc) they might have made a conscious decision to go to a school other then number one in the country.

You should also take into consideration the area of the country you live in and if there is a Veterinary School near you as that would also be a factor in the school your Vet decided to attend. Especially if their practice is dedicated to small animal care. For someone like Indiana and Davinia’s aunt who wants to specialize in large animals specifically Primates she wanted to choose the school with the best Primate program.

Living in Miami our Veterinarian went to the University of Florida and has been caring for my families pets since right after he graduated from Veterinary School. I drive past a number of much closer offices to get to his because he is honest about what the dogs need, is willing to discuss their individual needs, does not overcharge, and if something major is needed he will discuss the options and how successful it would or would not be. His staff stays with him for years and years and are always friendly and smiling.
