My Blog is Carbon Neutral

How does a tree neutralize your blog’s carbon footprint?

“My blog is carbon neutral” is an initiative, originally started in Germany by the “Make it Green” program, that has the goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We plant a tree for your blog and thereby neutralize your blog’s carbon footprint for the next 50 years! Everyone can make a small contribution to the environment. Every tree counts!

How much carbon dioxide does your blog create?
According to a study by Alexander Wissner-Gross, PhD, physicist at Harvard University and environmental activist, an average website causes about 0.02g (0,0008oz.) of carbon dioxide for each visit. Assuming an average blog gets 15,000 visits a month, it has yearly carbon dioxide emissions of 3,6kg (8lb.). This can mainly be tracked back to the immense energy usage from (mainframe) computers, servers, and their cooling systems.

In general I think I live a pretty carbon neutral life. I try not to turn the air conditioner or heater on until it is absolutely necessary and then I keep my AC set at 78 degrees in the main part of the house and about 76 in my bedroom at night. I try to leave the lights off in rooms I am not in and if it is sunny enough outside I don’t turn the lights on until it gets dark out. I am not a fanatic about things the truth is I do it in order to save money on my electric bill and less about the environmental impact. Most of my garbage goes in the recycling bin.

While I am sure that my blog was already Carbon Neutral considering the state of my backyard and the fact that seeds are sprouting in it on a daily basis into beautiful palm trees it never hurts to plant another tree.  I am posting this to help spread the word to all of you to do the same for your blog whether it be planting a new tree in your own yard this spring or having a tree planted for you in the forest every little bit helps.
