Avocado and Senior Dogs
Davinia and Indiana were given the opportunity to give AvoDerm® Revolving Menu a food built on a base of Avocado try. It was a toss up between two of their proteins for us either their Duck Recipe or their Trout and Pea. Since the girls had been on a Duck based food right before this food trial began I felt that it was important to rotate their protein selection and it had been a really long time since they had white fish of any kind in their their diet I decided it would be the right choice.
AVOCADO!
Before I go forward I want to go back a little bit to talk about the fact that all of the AvoDerm products contain Avocado! I say that with excitement because I do think that Avocado is a safe and great source of essential fatty acids for both myself and the girls. Long before there were infographics and online “gurus” telling people that avocado is toxic to dogs we had a Florida Avocado Tree and a Chocolate Labrador that would sit under the tree waiting for the Avocados to drop from the sky (it was an old tree so the avocados were way up at the tippy top) so that she could eat them. The only results of her Avocado binge was that by the end of the season she would pretty much be shaped like an avocado, her skin glowed and I guess looking back it probably helped her eyes as well. Fast forward about 12 years and Davinia and Indiana came into my life. Davinia and Indiana have never had the crazy full or long flowing coats as most Cavaliers here in the US have so I emailed a Breeder with dogs that had long flow-y ears and coats that looked healthy but not exaggerated and asked her what she did to help achieve that glow and well-rounded look. Her reply included the regular inclusion of 1/8 of an AVOCADO per dog!

AvoDerm Revolving Menu
That brings us to more recent thoughts that their old food just wasn’t cutting it anymore. They were missing that “glow” and they weren’t excited about their food. I figured why not give AvoDerm Revolving Menu a try. The unthinkable happened and we literally ran out of their old food the day that the new one arrived. I had nothing to mix the new food with but I ripped open the bag let Davinia and Indiana give it a try. They LOVED it. Their little tummies loved it and so our three month trial began. While we 1000% don’t recommend every going cold turkey from one food to another it is a sign for us that things will go well with the new food. As the months went by their coats began to glow. Their fur grew in healthy and full and their eyes were becoming brighter.
Senior Dogs and Avocado
They were really enjoying the food! Clearly the combination of Trout and Peas and Avocado were working their magic for Davinia and Indiana. By the time the original bag of food ran out (it takes a while to go through a normal sized bag of food because they are so little) our three month trial was up and the results were in. AvoDerm Revolving Menu was full of the good stuff! And by good stuff I mean trout and salmon and chick peas and pea and avocado and sweet potato. YUM! Next up in the flavor rotation is probably Duck though there are some other great options if you don’t have picky pants dogs at your house or go for the smaller bags so that you can rotate protein more often. That is part of our problem. We live far away from the well stocked stores that carries AvoDerm and so when we order AvoDerm Revolving Menu online or do head out to the store I want to make sure that we are covered for a while. Yes, that does defeat the purpose of regularly rotating their diet but I think I am going to have to invest in a few heavy duty containers so that we can order a few smaller bags and rotate them in and out more regularly. I think that is one of the big things with Senior Dogs is that their nutrition needs are many and staying with one food or one protein for too long just stops providing what they need. Plus change brings excitement and Senior Dogs love special treats and when that “healthy treat” is really a bowl full of food full of really great ingredients everyone is happy.
What I do know is that these two Senior Cavalier King Charles Spaniels LOVE the food and their coats look great after our 3 month test! They have a happy glow about them and are ready to face any challenge ok fine maybe just climbing on top of the rocks at grandma and grandpa’s house and playing queen of the mountain. They do love their walk and their coats are shining as they go!
