6 Favorite Dog Movies

6 of My Favorite Dog Movies

This post contains affiliate links to some of my favorite dog Movies so that you can easily click and purchase the movie. Not all movies in the list are still available to own on DVD or rent through Amazon Prime as they might have come back out for various anniversary celebrations or limited editions runs and have been locked back up in the Disney Vault. I tried to link only to official sellers when possible.

Favorite Dog Movies

I thought it would be fun to put together a list of 6 of my favorite dog movies. Fall tends be be rather rainy around here and what is more fun to do on a rainy day then snuggle in bed with your dogs and watch movies? I say why not make them dog movies. Whether they are a Disney Animated Classic or a hilariously funny comedy these dog movies are truly one of a kind, entertaining, and fun to watch or re-watch for the hundredth time.

Lady and the Tramp
The first movie on my list is Lady and the Tramp a true classic in every sense of the word. Lady and the Tramp is a 1955 American animated romance film produced by Walt Disney and released to theaters on June 22, 1955. Lady’s story was the recreation of the true story of one of the Disney Animators own dog’s named Lady. The idea was put before Walt Disney in 1937. The movie was worked on many times over the course of years being picked up between projects until finally borrowing from a lot of different sources the Movie that we know as Lady and the Tramp was Released.

101 Dalmations
The next movie on my list is also an animated movie from the Disney Collection. One Hundred and One Dalmations is a 1961 American animated adventure film produced by Walt Disney and based on the novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. The 17th in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, the film was originally released to theaters on January 25, 1961.

Eight Below
Moving away from Animated Movies to real dogs I think that Eight Below really shows dogs in their element. This movie was inspired by the true story of a Japanese Expedition to Antarctica in 1958, EIGHT BELOW is an exciting action-adventure about loyalty and the bonds of friendship set in the extreme wilderness of Antarctica released in theaters on February 17, 2006. In Eight Below there are two Alaskan Malamutes and six Siberian Huskies along with 24 stunt dogs that helped fill in for the main characters to keep them from injury and getting overtired during the shooting of the movie.

Turner and Hooch
This is a movie I actually saw in the movie theater. Turner and Hooch is a 1989 comedy / drama / crime film starring Tom Hanks and Beasley the Dogue de Bordeaux. it has been a while since I have seen this movie but I have a thing for Dogue de Bordeaux (if I were ever to get a really large dog this would be it.) I guess even as a little girl I had a thing for them whether I realize it or not.

Beethoven
Beethoven another movie I saw in the movie theater. Beethoven is a 1992 family comedy. It was the first in a series of 7 movies in the film series only two of which ere released in theaters. Beethoven weighs in at a whopping 185lbs full of energy, misadventure, and love. This isn’t necessarily a feel good dog movie. It touches on topics such as pet stores, animal experimentation, and labeling dogs as vicious through no fault of their own.

Best in Show
Best In Show a movie I have literally seen over and over again. Best in Show is a 2000 improvisational comedy film that follows five entrants in a prestigious dog show. The film focuses on the slightly unbelievable interactions among the various owners and handlers as they travel to the show and compete, and after the show. If you have never seen this movie before it will have you laughing from scene 1. It is presented as a documentary of five dogs and their owners destined to show in the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show, held in Philadelphia. You are sure to recognize at least a few of the actors and actresses in this movie.
