In our first post for Sweet Relish I told you all about Sweet Relish and touched very briefly on our Relish List called “What your new Shelter puppy needs when it gets home”. Its an all inclusive list of everything from bowls to toys to enrichment games, to a special mat to wipe dirty little paws. Today I want to go much more in depth on some of the items that are included in our list. See this was the first time that Sweet Relish worked directly with Pet Bloggers and Pet Brands so they sent us a box of goodies and asked for us to take a look and tell them what we thought.

Thundershirt:
We have heard some absolutely amazing things about the Thundershirt from friends and readers. In fact when I posed the question about a year ago on our Facebook Page what product should we do a Giveaway for mulitple people said Thundershirt. We tried several times to get our hands on an opportunity to work with them but it never quite worked out. Until now. No giveaway this time but we did get sent one for review. Indiana has very few fears – think a pot falling in the kitchen or a giant thunder clap in the middle of the night when you are sleeping. She loves car rides and while she isn’t a fan of every dog in the world she doesn’t have issues there either. Both Davinia and Indiana could care less about Fireworks which is a good thing considering we saw and heard the Hong Kong Disney Fireworks every night when we lived in Hong Kong. Davinia used to have issues with the car but she no longer gets car sick and right now we are living in the mountains in an area where she knows pretty much all of the dogs already. So we haven’t had the opportunity to give it a real test. But with so many friends and fans with dogs we have gotten to hear first hand accounts of dogs that used to shiver in fear during rain storms that can now sleep comfortably during them when wearing their Thundershirt. Same thing with Fireworks on July 4th and New Year’s Eve. Basically a Thundershirt would be a great addition to any must have list when you are getting ready to bring home a shelter or rescue dog. If you have one on hand and notice a problem during a rain storm you could put it on your new dog and help calm their fears. Maybe you live in an area with a lot of dogs and you aren’t sure how your new dog will react to all the coming and going and new dogs they encounter putting the Thundershirt on before you take them outside is a great way to help ease any tension and calm their fears about new places, spaces, and meetings. Cavaliers in general are pretty happy little dogs that like to meet new people and aren’t overly fearful but with any rescue you don’t know what their old life was like and so a little reassurance in the beginning will go a long way to help your relationship start off right.

Eco-me Dry Dog Shampoo in Lavender
I have always wanted to try dry dog shampoo. I have seen it used before at dog shows and know that it helps clean dirty little paws. I always wondered if it only worked because the dogs were freshly bathed and already super clean and only had a little dirt or mud on their paws. Davinia decided to give us a reason to try it out. I took the girls for a walk on the golf course the other day and because of all the rain this winter a stream the might not otherwise have had much water was free flowing. So we went over to get a closer look. Knowing the water was flowing right out of the mountains I saw no reason why the girls shouldn’t drink from the water. First Indiana in trying not to get wet kind of fell in. Her front legs got all muddy but no big deal. Then Davinia decided she wanted to walk around in the stream. Only she has never been in water that is shallow enough for her to walk around what wasn’t solid group so she kind of got full of mud. Once she was already full of mud and Indiana was rolling around while wet on the ground I figured there was no harm in letting Davinia go into the pond. She got covered in mud. The first picture you see above is after she had already been in the car in her crate on a blanket so you can imagine how dirty she was. After she dried off she was still all orange because well the mud here is actually Georgia Clay which is orange. So I took her outside and used our container of Eco-me Dry Dog Shampoo and rubbed it all over her. It started working instantly! You could see the dirt falling off of her right onto the table (its easier to clean the table then the wood on the porch). Since the product is non toxic and smells like fresh lavender which is also not an issue for dogs I decided that I would take off what I could and then rub in some more and let Davinia shake and have fun (I didn’t really think the orange would be completely gone) without getting crazy about removing all of the dry shampoo. By the next morning I had a very clean and fresh smelling dog.
This is a great product to have on hand if you are adopting a Cavalier. They love to play and run around and explore just like big dogs only they are much lower to the ground and tend to pick up a lot of dirty. Davinia and Indiana don’t mind walking in the rain either and many Cavaliers don’t care either so this is a great product to have on hand for between bath times to help keep your dog and home clean. They also have another scent that would probably be great in the summer so when we finish this one I will be looking into trying the Grapefruit scent.
