Biloxi, Mississippi, residents lined up on Sunday, when it became clear that Hurricane Isaac was going to sideswipe the East Coast of Florida and vent his fury on the Gulf Coast, in order have their dogs micro-chipped at the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The Humane Society of South Mississippi opened its doors to provide an emergency microchip and tag clinic to try and keep pets safe and identifiable in case they got separated from their owners during or after the storm. With images of Hurricane Katrina being pushed into the minds of Gulf Coast residents no one wants a repeat of what happened to pets to happen again. When Hurricane Isaac makes landfall they will be prepared.

Shelter pets were evacuated from the region in order to free up kennel space for residents to leave their dogs as well as to get the dogs and cats out of an area that was being evacuated due to Hurricane Isaac. The Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took in 45 dogs and 24 cats from St. Bernard Parish near Louisiana. This morning, SPCA workers were evaluating and carrying for the dogs and cats sent to them, giving them any necessary shots, checking if they were spayed and neutered and giving them a complete medical examination, checking for rabies, heart worms, FIV, and any diseases like Parvo and Distemper to ensure they would not spread disease to those dogs and cats already in their care. Since the 45 dogs and 24 cats were transferred from another shelter most are already ready for adoption. After their medical checks, the animals will be available for adoption, with a sign above them noting they were Hurricane Isaac Evacuees rescued from Louisiana.
