New Years Resolutions: Clipping Your Dogs Nails

Its a new year which means a clean slate. Many of you probably made a list of New Year’s Resolutions maybe they are the same as last year or maybe they are completely new. Did you remember to include your pet’s health on your list? Since they can’t make these decisions for themselves we need to help keep them in good health so they can be with us for years to come.

Resolution number two is happy paws for your pet. That means keeping your dog’s nails trimmed down so they don’t make music as they walk along in the house. Clipped nails means that your dog will not be in pain with each step they take or risk breaking their nails on the pavement when they go for a walk. It means they will not need to walk funny and can zoom around the house like the happy dogs that they are. That also means not forgetting about your dog’s dew claws.

For us that is the only thing that does not stay filed down from our daily walks and I HATE doing it myself so whenever they go to the vet to board or for visits I always have them clip their dew claws. Though now that I see you can use a strong nail file I think I will be investing in one to use that on their dew claws.

For all of the dog moms and dads out there here is a video to show you how to go about clipping your dogs nails in 7 easy to follow steps:

Are you ready to take on the challenge of giving your dog a pedicure every 4 – 6 weeks?

Some things to remember:

  • Start slowly a little clip to get them used to the sensation and then let them go off to play or give a little treat.
  • If your pet is older and you have never clipped nails at home a nail or two at a time is perfectly fine.
  • Some dogs will wiggle or squirm try to get them into a position they will stay relaxed
  • Less is more. Cut a little and within a few days the quick will move deeper into the nail so you can cut a bit lower. You can always go back and cut then.
  • If you clip the quick try and stay calm it will help your pet stay calm.
