Sasha a homeless deaf white Pit Bullhas been selected as a Red Cross “Animal Hero of the Year” for her work with at-risk kids in the community.

Even though she can’t hear the sound of her own name she has been able to reach children who are at risk themselves. Her presence in their classroom has helped them learn about how their behaviors effect others around them. The students are eager to to help train Sasha learning her sign language so they can communicate with her.

Animal behavioral specialist Cindy Ehlers has been working with Sasha to teach her sign language. And she’s getting help from the kids who are in detention at Lane County’s John Serbu Youth Campus. Teacher Mike Washburn says Sasha’s presence has been beneficial to the kids, “because there’s a lot of similarities in training a dog and their behaviors, and the behaviors the kids have to work on.”
