Often times famiies with pets don’t go away on vacations as often because thy don’t want to leave their pets behind. Other families feel that kennel fees or dog sitter fees on top of all of the other vacation expenses just make things too expensive. Instead of forgoing the vacation why not do things a little closer to home. You can still enjoy your time off of work and you get to spend quality time with your dog. Take a Staycation. Only instead of getting on a plane and staying at a hotel you can stay in your house. Before your staycation use some of that saved money and have someone come in and deep clean your house for you. A clean organized place to relax is key in making your time off count. It is also part of the allure of staying at a hotel. Instead of room service at $30 for a hamburger order in Pizza or Chinese another family favorite. The $30 you would have spent on one burger can feed the entire family!

What can you do during your staycation?:
Take a hike.
Walking is the best exercise for you and your dog. Find some park or scenic area and plan a hike in advance that way when your staycation comes you are ready to make the most of your free time. Pack a picnic lunch and water and go explore. (make sure to bring along water and treats for the dog too!)

Read a book. You don’t have to be sitting in a far away place to settle in with a good summer read or curled up in front of a warm fire. Go to a local coffee house and splurge on a cappuccino or other creation and spend a few hours lost in a book. Coffee houses with outdoor seating often allow well behaved dogs to join you. Call ahead and enjoy some time outside in the fresh air with your dog while enjoying a good book and some coffee.

Rent a movie or chose in a family favorite that you already own. For a treat during the movie serve these fun drinks. If your family prefers something other then milk be creative. Water can substitute for milk as melted snow. The saving from watching a movie at home vs going to the movie theater will allow you to really splurge on something the family really wants.

Visit a local Small Town and walk around. Many small towns welcome visiting dogs. They might not be allowed in every shop but you will have the chance to get away from your regular everyday and explore something different. Small towns sometimes have regular free events that take place during the weekend so check ahead so that you can plan your day accordingly. Small towns sometimes even have dog parks that are hidden gems. They provide everything at the dog park that you wish was available locally and you and your dog can enjoy some time running around playing fetch and socializing with other people and dogs.
