#SewforSandy Crafts To Aid Pets

#sewforsandy

Earlier this week I received a late night email from a editor at Huffington Post asking if they could use a picture of Davinia and link back to a really old post of ours about how to make a no sew blanket. Of course Davinia immediately agreed especially because she looks like such a Diva dog in the picture. The next day we received another email from the same editor telling us the #sewforsandy post was up and live and that we should check it out.

You can check out the post Crafts To Aid Pets Affected By The Hurricane.
It talks about various ways to help animals that have now found themselves without a home because it was so badly damaged that there was nothing left and about how you can help animals that were already in shelters that were flooded or are still awaiting power in what is now really dangerously low temperatures that dogs and cats are not meant to have to deal with (unless they are huskies). The Huffintgon Post Editor thought it would be a really great idea to inspire crafty people to help in a way they love best by making warm clothing, blankets, and beds to replace the ones these animals lost in the devastation that Hurricane Sandy left behind.

We think this is a awesome idea (whether or not they showcased our crafts project) because lets face it dogs and cats while they are receiving some help from big organizations who have mobilized their animal emergency semi’s full of food, litter, crates, and bedding it just isn’t enough. And even though pet food brands are sending tons and tons of food to the area effected by Sandy it also is not enough. Plus we all want to feel like we are going something to help even though we might be hundreds or thousands of miles away. We love this idea even more because for a few of these crafts you don’t even know how to sew! You just need some scissors and some material to get it done!

No one at this house is busting out a sewing machine (mainly because we don’t own one) and making doggy couture but we can get out all that fleece material in the closet and make some no sew blankets and send them up north. Our challenge to ourselves is that by Tuesday we will have made a box full of no sew blankets and have them ready to ship out! Our challenge to all of you is to do the same. If you don’t already have fleece fabric at home Jo Ann Fabric (I ban myself from that store because I love fabric but don’t know how to sew so I buy it and then it sits around forever) has an amazing selection of Fleece and they always have stuff on sale and trust me the dogs and cats that are going to bed cold right now will not care if the pattern is outdated or misprinted they will be happy for something warm to cuddle into. They will just be happy to have something so warm and soft to curl up in. For those of you who are more crafty and talented we suggest you visit the Huffington Post Article and check out the pictures at the bottom with links to how to make everything from no sew pet sweaters to quilted blankets.

I am however partial to no sew blankets because everyone in the family can get involved. From young children to grandparents. All you need is some fabric, scissors, and know hot to tie a knot. If you are feeling really adventurous you can put two pieces of fabric together and make a double sided no sew blanket. Cut the fabric so that the two pieces are even and together and then you can instead of just making a knot you can make a bow either in matching or corresponding fabric patterns. Grandparents have fun doing this craft with their grandchildren because it is something they can all do together everyone take a side and they knot that side plus they can spend quality time with each other. Ok so we said we are challenging you to take part in #sewforsandy and we are. If you are going to take us up on the challenge let us know in the comments below and if you would like you can upload a picture of your box full of crafts / blankets / sweaters / etc to Two Little Cavaliers Facebook wall so everyone can see!

If you need some fabric inspiration check out these cute patterns that would make great no sew blankets!
