Volunteers Needed to Hike with Shelter Dogs / Pet Bloggers Blog Hop

Calling all dog lovers in Forsyth County North Carolina. How would you like to help out at the local shelter by taking a dog for a hike on a nice Sunday afternoon? This isn’t a little short walk around the facility so the dogs at the shelter can go potty. Hiking Hounds is a program geared towards getting the dogs out and about interacting with people, getting fresh air, exploring, and just getting to be dogs. The hiking volunteers will of course be evaluating the dogs and observing them for both positive and negative behavior but this will allow the shelter to tell potential adopters that the dog loves to go for walks or maybe would prefer to stay home on the couch. Maybe the dog sees water and makes a mad dash pulling its person with them so they can go swim in the water or aren’t good near smaller dogs.

Whatever the outcome of the walks will give the shelter a better understanding of the dogs in their care and will be able to place them in better homes with the information they receive from the Hiking for Hounds Volunteers. Those willing to hike with the shelter dogs must be 16 years old and attend a meeting the Tuesday night before the Hiking adventure. Hiking for Hounds is a once a month event which will tae place on the second Tuesday of the month and seems like a truly amazing thing for the dogs who are stuck in cages all day every day.

The September dates have already been set. The orientation will take place on Sept. 6 from 6-7 p.m. The hike is scheduled for Sept. 11 from 1-4 p.m. There is no monthly commitment, meaning you can hike on one month or every month. For more information, visit the Forsyth County Animal Control website.

This is truly the kind of program that we need to see occurring in more shelters across the country the dogs benefit, the adoptive families benefit, and the dogs get seen by more people when they are out hiking which could raise their chance of getting adopted faster.

Hi! Great idea… Mom’s stepmom volunteered every weekend for years, walking dogs at Pet Orphans in Van Nuys, CA. Very rewarding and such great results. Win/Win.

Just don’t walk the cats. Not me, anyway. I’ll walk when I feel like walking, where I feel like walking. Thank you.

  3. What a great idea. Usually it’s hard to give good information about a dog outside a shelter environment unless he’s being fostered. This could be a great tool to match dogs with their people.

Hope they get lots of takers. I’d love to do it if I were closer.

  4. Hi Y’all,

What a great program to promote on a weekend! Forsythe Cnty, NC is a long way from anyplace I usually am, but then I’m a dog and wouldn’t want to share my Human anyway!

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

I love this idea. What a great way to volunteer. I’d like to see more of these programs.
