Men Love Dogs too… A few things I’ve learnt

Luna the Beagle

I’ve always known that you can learn a lot from animals, from the smallest ants working together in a community, to the largest herds of Elephants meandering along the plains, something has to be said for their ability to communicate with each other and to look out for each other. So why don’t we look closer to home and see the lessons that we can learn from our own animals? Luna has been in our lives for just over six months now, and I wanted to share some of the lessons that she continuously teaches me.

Patience: This is probably one of the most important ones. Luna quite enjoys testing my patience, whether it’s seeing if she can sneak that carrot from the fridge, jumping up on the dining room table, or trying to eat my shoes. Sometimes it is important to take a step back and think, she doesn’t understand English, she is still a puppy and she’s just trying to have fun.

Persistence: We have our good days, and we have our bad days, and I’m sure that we are not the only ones. There are plenty of times where Luna is much more interested in the ground than she is in me, especially at obedience training. There is no point, however, getting angry, frustrated or giving up, it’s important for all of our sakes, to keep trying, keep learning and stick with it.

Unconditional Love: The bond that we share with our animals is nothing short of amazing. They are our rocks during the tough times, they are with us for our best times and they don’t ask for much in return. Their unconditional love for their owners can be seen in the twinkle of their eye, the wag of their tail, and the smile, of sorts, on their faces. We could learn a lot about love from them.

Live life to the full: Have you taken your pup to a secure off leash park before? Let them off lead and see how they run like there is no tomorrow? It’s exhilarating to watch your puppy loving life, running to their hearts content and just living life. They don’t worry about the GFC (as long as they get treats, life is good) or the weather (rain, hail or shine! Some pups don’t enjoy it as much, but Luna loves a good run around in the rain). I once saw a saying that read: Live each day as if someone left the gate open!

Puppy dog eyes: Who can resist them? I know I can’t… Want something a little bit special, but you aren’t getting anywhere? Bust out the puppy dog eyes!

That’s it for Men Love Dogs Too this week! Hope to see you back again next week and I would love to hear what your dogs have taught you.
