Teething Puppy Can't Chew on Audiobooks 1

Anyone that brings a new puppy into their home or any dog under 6 months knows that anything that puppy can get a hold of will get chewed on. This is especially true of any item that helps alleviate the pain for a teething puppy growing in new teeth which pretty much means anything with a little give that is not hard on the initial curiosity bite is fair game. I am pretty sure that is what happened to me when Davinia was a puppy. I left a book I was reading in bed while I went to go get ready or work. When I got back to the room to put the book in my purse to read on the subway on the way to work. The end of the book had been shredded and there was Davinia looking all happy next to it. Teething puppy Davinia didn’t ever really get into much but there was something about that book that day that as too tempting to pass up. Thank goodness it was a favorite book of mine one that I had read multiple times over the years and so I knew the ending. But it taught me a lesson. Don’t leave a book on the bed if I want to finish it.

Before Indiana made it to our house as a 9 week old little ball of fur she had eaten her first book. From what I understand it was the entire book that the teething puppy destroyed but I never got the full story or why she was left along with a bookshelf full of books at that age. I knew it would be a while before a book would be safe from a teething puppy. Even the books in our apartment had to be puppy proof meaning the entire bottom shelf had to remain empty!

To this day Davinia and Indiana are not exactly the best book buddies. They love to get to sit in my lap while I read but they don’t want me to turn the page or want me to close the book and give them some attention. It might be cute once in a while that they literally put their paws down that I need to pay attention to them and not the book. Of course it is difficult to read very much that way – trust me they did it to me the entire time I was studying for my MBA. When they were ready for attention they would stick their paw or their nose in the book and that would be the end of me reading for the moment. They love watching tv with me because I don’t need to turn the page or put the book on them while I am trying to read. I can rub their tummies or rub their heads while watching tv. The same is true of audiobooks.

  6. Your dogs are so cute, they model the earphones well! That said, my dog is 4 and still chews everything so books aren’t necessarily safe after puppyhood! Listening to audiobooks is a great idea when you have pups and also when you have young children because you can listen hands free!
