Secondhand Horses by Lauraine Snelling and Kathleen Wright tells the story of eleven- year old Sunny Martin and her friends that make up the S.A.V.E. Squad.
Oops, Sunny just burned spaghetti dinner again. Her parents are tired of her “great ideas” that incidentally turn into disasters. She convinces them to send her to her Uncle Dave’s ranch so that she can become “Finish it Sunny” instead of “Great Idea Sunny”. Her trip with her fellow S.A.V.E. squad members to the local fair results in a purchase of a secondhand petting zoo menagerie. Uncle Dave won’t mind, will he? The addition of the mini horse, the goose, the pig, and the pygmy goat to his secondhand horses set off a chain of events that are anything but “great ideas”. Sunny, Aneta, Vee, and Esther make up the S.A.V.E. squad and after Uncle Dave’s introduction to the petting zoo find themselves temporary ranch hands on afternoons and weekends until Uncle Dave is no longer injured. Uncle Dave wants the girls to find homes for the animals and the girls set off planning to save this little group by figuring out each animal’s purpose. Soon after, strange things start happening around the ranch and it begins with the arrival of a new horse the girls name Mystery. Where did she come from and who keeps getting into the barn? Will Sunny ever be “Great Idea Sunny” or “Finish It Sunny”? You need to read this book to find out.
Lauraine Snelling and Kathleen Wright have done it again with a fantastic addition to the S.A.V.E. squad books. The first two books in the series are Dog Daze and The Cat Caper which are also two adorable stories. Secondhand Horses kept me reading well into the wee hours and would be perfect for any girl from first through fifth grade. I know that my nieces will all want their own copy of Secondhand Horses which is now available through Amazon.com and other fine retailers.
