Cooking for Dogs Sweet Potato Hashbrowns

Cooking for Dogs

Sunday mornings are a big deal at Casa de Kolchak
Sunday is that day of the week when we forget about all the things we should be doing and we focus on the things that make us happy. We snuggle on the couch, we read our favourite blogs, and most importantly, we make breakfast.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so we want to be sure we do it right!
One of our favourite breakfast foods is hash browns. They’re just so versatile! You can make hash browns anything you want them to be: hot and spicy, fresh and flavourful, or most importantly at our house, totally dog-friendly.

A favourite with a twist.
At our house, we are big fans of the non-traditional, so our favourite hash browns are Sweet Potato hash browns. They are so rich and yummy – plus, they are legitimately good for you. Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene and studies show that eating them with a bit of fat (3 – 5 grams) actually increases the uptake of beta carotene. An excuse to add a bit of turkey bacon to breakfast? Jackpot. Sweet potatoes have some great anti-inflammatory properties and they can even help to regulate your blood sugar.

Sweet Potato Hashbrowns

Whether you are a pup or a person, sweet potato hash browns are a great way to start your day.
Our favourite recipe is more of a breakfast hash, than a basic hash brown. When I was a kid, my Mom used to make this type of breakfast for us every weekend using whatever meat and veggies we happened to have in the house. She (so eloquently) called her creations “crap in a pan”, a reference to how easy it was to just throw stuff in a pan and scramble it up. Here at Casa de Kolchak, we prefer to call it the Dog’s Breakfast.

Want to know the secret to perfect potatoes? Dice them up the night before and soak them in a water bath overnight. This will reduce the amount of surface starch on them and then you can skip the hassle of boiling them before you fry them.

Sweet Potato Hashbrowns

The Dog’s Breakfast
Serves 1 human and 2 small dogs
• 1 diced potato
• 1 diced sweet potato
• ¼ cup diced sweet bell peppers
• ¼ cup diced zucchini
• ¼ c. shredded cheese
• 2 strips low-sodium turkey bacon, cooked, drained and broken into chunks
• 2 eggs
• optional: small pinch minced garlic
• drizzle of olive oil (1/2 tsp.)

Heat a pan to medium-high heat. Toss your potato and sweet potato in the pan, with a drizzle of olive oil. Sauté potatoes for 2 – 3 minutes, until they are fork tender. Add zucchini and sweet peppers. If desired, add minced garlic. Sauté for another 2 minutes, then break the eggs into the pan and scramble them in. Toss cheese and turkey bacon into the mix and stir. The Dog’s breakfast is ready when everything is a tasty golden brown colour and the potatoes are tender.

Don’t forget to serve your dog a size-appropriate taste. My dogs love these hash browns and they can’t wait for Sunday mornings, but since this isn’t a balanced meal, they shouldn’t have too much.

What is your favourite weekend breakfast?

Great idea, but you should NEVER give your dog garlic of any kind. It’s toxic to them. Not powdered or raw.
