Pioneer Theater Company featuring shelter dogs in upcoming Christmas classic

Pioneer Theatre Company will be giving shelter dogs from the Humane Society of Utah their big break in show business during an upcoming run of the musical “Annie” (Opens Friday, December 2nd, through December 23rd).  During act one, the red-headed orphan Annie runs away from the orphanage and encounters a friendly stray dog. Annie comforts the dog and names it Sandy, singing to him of better days to come. The dog playing Sandy and all the dogs going back to the very first production of Annie by this theater group in 1977 know what its like to be unwanted and unloved. They are all rescues taken in by the dog trainer for the theater company.

But Sandy’s sidekicks aren’t so fortunate and the dog that is captured by the dog catcher iin this stge production is actually a shelter dog looking for a new home. During each production, a shelter animal from the Humane Society of Utah will play the part of this unlucky dog. In an effort to help promote adoptions of homeless animals, Pioneer Theater Company will inform the audience at every performance about each dog playing this role and that it is currently available for adoption. The shelter will also be in the lobby during intermission and after the show with even more adoptable dogs in order to meet members of the audience and hopefully find a new family to rescue these stage stars from a ‘Hard Knock Life!’

Pionneer Theater Company is located at the University of Utah 300 S. 1400 E. Salt Lake City, UT 84112
