Cooking For Dogs – Toasted Chick Peas

This is a super easy treat to make for your dogs. Some very high end dog foods include chick peas in their formulation as a protein source. This makes a great snack for a dog who is on a grain free diet, one who could stand to loose a pound or two, or for a family with young children around who like to give one treat to the dog and one to themselves.

Toasted Chick Pea Snacks for Dogs

1 14 oz can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 teaspoon cinnamon or garlic powder whichever your dog likes best you could really use any seasoning that your dog enjoys
1/4 teaspoon salt (if you are going to be sharing with your dogs you will want to add a touch of salt)

Preheat Oven to 450 * I skipped this step and don’t think the chick peas came out as toasted as they could have been as you can see from the picture above. I was scared that the recipe I found had said 450 instead of 350 and so just put the chick peas in the oven as it was warming up. Next time I will be sure to heat the oven first. Lesson learned but still a fun snack.

Place chickpeas in a suitable baking tray lined with wax paper or you could just use a baking dish very lightly oiled making sure it is big enough that the chick peas are not on top of each other.

Bake at 450 F for 30 minutes.

Transfer chickpeas to a bowl and mix thoroughly with the the oil and seasonings of your choice.

Enjoy warm, or bring to room temperature and store in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.

***You might hear some popping chickpeas while they are cooking. Don’t worry about that but be careful when taking them out of the oven as there is a slight possibility that they could still be popping open. Not all will pop open as they are already split but there are a few that are still tightly in their skin. ***

    • We love our loyal readers. This was actually a recipe that I found on a people cooking blog but I took out some ingredients and added some more in depth instructions. No reason the whole family can’t share. In fact that it the whole point of this new cooking section to show that cooking for your dog doesn’t have to be a labor intense process using ingredients we would never eat. Nor does it have to be something that you do for them for their regular meals it can be add on or special treats or even a few pieces of fruit.

  2. what a great idea…thanks

Yum, the peeps and pups at Casa de Kolchak love crunchy Chickpeas. I like to take a separate bowl for the humans and put the salt and popcorn spices on them – like dill, ranch or sweet chili. The dogs like a sprinkle of ground dehydrated chicken on theirs. So tasty!

  4. That looks yummy! I think I will make some for myself. 🙂

  5. Yummy! Those also sound good for humans 🙂

Swing on by for a visit some time!
