Dog Found Starving
A mother and son who left their dogs underfed were branded “shocking” and told they had “behaved disgracefully” by an outraged magistrate. Pearl and David Marshall, of Shrewsbury Terrace, South Shields, left no fewer than eight Staffordshire bull terriers, including four puppies, in different stages of neglect.
David Marshall, 24, pleaded guilty at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court to one charge of failing to ensure the welfare of an animal, and his 42-year-old mother pleaded guilty to six charges, two the same as her son and four of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

The Staffordshire bull terriers, owned by David Marshall, were being kept at his grandmother’s address, in St Mark’s Way, South Shields, while he looked for a suitable house.

Anyone who would do such to a poor animal is totally repellant.
I hate to say this, but your blog makes me sad. We need more happy animal stories! And God knows we need far few people who would abuse animals. It completely infuriates me, and the sentences are NEVER harsh enough.

Sad story for a Saturday morning, but I guess at least the people responsible are being held responsible.
How sad for the poor dogs. There are too many cases of starvation, deliberate or otherwise.
I read several articles about the outrage people feel reading such stories and the revenge they want to take. While that might not be completely right either, it is clear that a slap on the wrist won’t stop this abuse.
Should the punishment be proportionate to (however perceived) level of the crime (as the law still views pets as property) or should it simply be substantial enough to deter people from even thinking about such things? My vote is for the latter.
