My Veterinarian Drives a BMW and I Do Not Care

My Veterinarian Drives a BMW and Owns a Winter Home

Actually I have no idea what kind of car any of the Veterinarians at the practice we go to drive and I honestly don’t care. It is none of my business. Do you ask your doctor what kind of car they drive or inquire about the size of your accountant’s house or ask your child’s teacher how they could afford to go to Europe last summer with their family? It is not my business at all. Period.

My Veterinarian Drives A BMW and I Don't Care

I know that is shocking to say. A veterinarian is not a charity. Some may perform at reduced rates or help the local shelter or offer free routine care for the local K9 force and maybe their staff will even work for free for that hour as well but most likely the Veterinarian pays them out of his or her own pocket to assist. Yes, Veterinarians love animals probably more than they like people. But they have a right to charge what they think is fair so that they can cover their bills and live comfortably because as far as I am concerned the good ones and event the decent ones deserve it.

Every single time I have ever needed to take Davinia or Indiana to the Vet when they were sick the Vet office always found a way to squeeze us in or drop what they were currently doing in order to care for my dogs. Sure that comes at a premium but if my dog is sick I know I can call the vet and go over even in the middle of the night if the emergency warrants it. It honestly makes me mad when people say why does the best veterinarian in town charge so much or why do they have to charge for a visit when all my pets need are vaccinations. If you don’t want to pay for the best Veterinary care possible I am sure there are several other practices you can visit that charge less or you could go to a vaccination clinic that charges a fraction of the price. There are options available but if you want someone with years of experience treating your breed or graduated at the top of their class in that specialty, suck it up and deal with paying a visit fee on top of the the treatment and medication fee. But don’t say I want the same great service from the same great veterinarian for a fraction of the cost because I have 5 dogs or 8 cats and can’t afford the regular fee for them all and I should get a discount. You can ask if there is a multi pet pricing at that clinic or some special deal you can work out but don’t take to Social Media to complain because you can’t afford the health care on all of your animals. That is not the vets fault. Things happen and if you are a long time client they might work with you on fees if they can depending on what you need or the situation but don’t ask them to work for free because they love animal and how could they charge for their service? Really?

In most places a yearly Veterinary visit is a fraction of the cost of your regular check up at the Doctor. However we only pay a $20 co-pay at the doctor and your insurance covers the rest. It really spoils us for when we have to pay out of pocket for even routine Veterinary Care. There is Pet Insurance and you are welcome to purchase it but I suggest you do a lot of research first to make sure it is worth it for your family. In Europe and the UK by all accounts it is extremely worth buying while here in the US unless you have a Mutt with unknown pedigree you will probably not find it worth the cost. For me I was paying a whole heck of a lot more in a monthly premium per dog than I ever spend at the Veterinarians office in a year for 2. Ok there was one year it might have been but I am not sure that Davinia medical bills after she was a attacked would have been covered anyway.

And before you say that maybe I am lucky and have never had a large vet bill think again. Even at a Vaccination clinic that was supposed to be super cheap and everyone else walked out for under $50 my bill was $125 same service same vaccinations only I had a Cavalier so I got the “special” fees and we didn’t even get an exam. Lesson learned I can’t go to low cost vaccination clinics Or how about the low cost Veterinarian that told me Davinia was dying of congestive heart failure when she was about 3 and that I needed an Emergency EKG to determine the severity. I wouldn’t let her book the EKG and instead took Davinia to a practice that just to see the Vet was $85. The vet greeted her with a kiss made her feel comfortable in the room and low and behold Davinia’s heart was just fine. Oh and we got a second option from another vet at the same practice just to make sure! Actually several other vets wanted the chance to listen. Needless to say you get what you pay for. Davinia is now 10 and her heart is just fine. That was the initial vet fee plus the second opinion fee all to find out what I knew that Davinia comes from a long line of Cavaliers whose hearts are great.

Of course my largest vet bill was when Davinia was attacked. Her vet bills climbed to over $5,000 in a 24 hour period.I could have sweated the small stuff and bickered over the “silly things” like sharps disposal or the price of this or that but honestly I would sign my name to the credit card receipt no questions asked again because they literally saved Davinia’s life. The Emergency Practice had a Veterinarian on duty that night (it was the night after Christmas) that gave up going away or spending time off with his family so that he could help care for animals during that time. It wasn’t only the Veterinarian that was there that night but the vet techs and the front desk lady and all of the equipment that they had at their disposal to help care for Davinia that night.

Emergency Veterinary hours are for EMERGENCIES it cost a lot more to even see the Vet at 10pm or midnight or 3am then it does at noon. Consider that when you are too busy or can’t miss an hour of work to get to the vet before they close. If the after hours fee is $100 I hope you make well above that to justify not getting to the vet until they are officially closed and demand that they see you and charge the regular fee.

  1. I made the change from a more affordable vet to my current vet because the quality of care was much better and I discovered it really isn’t that much more expensive. Paying a little more in exchange for better medical care is a decision I’ll never regret.

  2. People don’t think about the cost of a vet before they get a dog or cat. They don’t calculate it their costs.

A friend was considering adopting a dog and asked me about it involves. I went through the walls, the food, etc. Then I pointed out the vet expense. She said she hadn’t thought of that. She decided she needed to think about the expenses.

  3. Well, when I worked at a design studio, the boss always said: “Never drive a better car than your client.” I can see the reasoning behind this. Whether or not it makes it true it’s another story. Also depends on the type of clients. Our vet always drove a van. More importantly, I always considered his pricing fair.

On the other hand, though, I do feel kind of apprehensive when the hospital I go to has a fancy ass marble lobby – makes me thing why I’m paying for that? (and yes, their prices were way higher for the same things) Paying for good service and quality equipment is a different story.

Oh my goodness, everything you said I couldn’t agree more! It drives me crazy when I hear people complain about the cost of veterinary care! If you don’t like it, don’t have a pet! We have a wonderful holistic vet that we pay extra to visit compared to a bare bones clinic, but she is worth every penny. Every time we have had an emergency, they have made room for us or arranged for us to be seen immediately at the emergency clinic (where they are just as wonderful!)… even on New Year’s Eve!

  5. We go to a vet now that costs more than the vet ma had been using for 30 yrs. We still have our other vet, who is a hour away but we have our current vet who is 4 blocks away. The thought that in an emergency a hour drive vs a 4 block walk is all it took to get ma’s attention. He started out being just an emergency vet but as time went on the convenience of getting our flea treatments, having my glands express and so on, changed ma’s mind. He drives a Toyota Corolla that has almost 300,000 miles on it and his wife drives a mini van.
He would rather invest his money into state of the arts equipment that other vets in this area do not have. Used to be that if your dog had glaucoma , you had to travel 2-4 hours one way to have the procedure done. He has the equipment and the training to do the procedure. He has the equipment and he has a medical team who keep their training up to date. Many vets get out of vet school and think they are done for life besides taking their yearly exams for their licenses.
My vet became a vet because he loves animals and you can clearly see it as soon as you walk through the doors. The atmosphere is liking walking into your home and not into a medical office.
That to the parents is worth the little extra it costs to go there. I love my vet.
