Tips for Cleaning Dog Stains

Any dog owner will tell you that accidents happen, messes happen, and cleaning is something that is par for the course when owning a dog or any pet for that matter. It is all how you deal with the mess when you find it that will save or destroy your carpet, furniture, or bedding. The sooner you find it the easier it will be to get rid of.

1. Soak it up.
Use a paper towel over the urine and soak up as much as you can. The sooner you soak it up, the easier it will be clean and clear away odor. Don’t rub just blot.

2. Relocate the towel.
Take the towel you used to soak up the urine and immediately put it in the washing machine or if you used paper throw it into the garbage can outside so that the smell does not linger in your home.

3. Rinse the stain.
Use cold water to rinse as much of the stain away as you can. Don’t scrub; just use a damp cloth to soak up water. Spraying with a water bottle is an easy way to tackle the stain and help loosen up the urine. Blot dry.

4. Add some baking soda.
Sprinkle the area with baking soda to help absorb the last of the odor and moisture. Just sprinkle it on and blot away. Pick the rest of the baking soda up with a vacuum. You can repeat this process several times until the odor is gone.

5. Use an odor neutralizer.
Find a good quality pet odor neutralizer at your local pet supply store. I have tried several over the years and the one that really does the job is Nature’s Miracle. Nature’s Miracle cleans up accidents, grass stains, mud, vomit, blood and odors. It works to permanently eliminate many organic stains and odors and features a light, clean scent. It can be used on carpets, hard surfaces, clothing, kennels and carriers and is ideal for stains and odors caused by dogs and other pets. It can actually be used to remove any biological stain whether animal or human. When treating carpets remember that you need to use enough to get all the way down to the carpet padding so that you remove all traces of odor or your dog will likely use that spot over and over again.

Don’t forget to treat the towel that you used to soak up the mess. Pre-treating it with Nature’s Miracle will help eliminate the stain and odor during washing.

Even if your pet is old enough and potty trained it is always a good idea to have a bottle around the house in case of accident or emergency. We left a bottle at my parent house a while ago and it came in really handy when they took the cat to the vet and she peed in her carrying bag on the way there. Anyone that knows cats know that cat urine is horrible and even more difficult to remove completely but Nature’s Miracle got rid of the stains and odor.

Soaked in dry stains are more difficult to remove but with some elbow grease and starting on them well in advance of company coming you can greatly decrease the stained area if not completely eliminate it.
