Watching The National Dog Show on television on Thanksgiving Day is one of our favorite Thanksgiving Traditions in our house. In fact, it ranks high above an actual Thanksgiving Dinner. I would much rather be able to sit in front of the TV and watch the National Dog Show then have to spend time in the kitchen cooking foods that I mostly don’t eat. In fact last year our Thanksgiving Meal consisted of Salmon. But you can be sure that I watched the National Dog Show with Davinia and Indiana sitting right next to me. After all it is tradition. Want to be let in on a little secret? When Indiana was younger and still a Show Dog I did consider entering her and making the trip down to Pennsylvania. I know that she would not have won – living in NY at the time we competed against some o the very best Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in the country every weekend and there was little chance that they or their handlers would be off their A game. So we stayed home and watched on Thanksgiving Day.

Wirehaired Vizsla National Dog Show Debut

The National Dog Show is presented by Purina / Purina ProPlan. Purina believes that all dogs whether a top show dog, a high flying agility dog, a hunting dog, or your dog sitting in the sun next to you needs exceptional nutrition for a long, healthy, active life. This year the show will be introducing 2 new breeds to viewers – The Coton de Tulear and the Wirehaired Vizsla. These two breeds are the latest to be added to the American Kennel Club Registry and breed enthusiasts are exited for their television debut.

If you are going to be away from home The National Dog Show also has a big presence at NBCSports.com and on the NBC Sports Live Extra app that includes a live stream of the entire NBC Thanksgiving Day show and will feature all seven group competition videos and Best in Show. Because of heavy interest from breed enthusiasts around the world, the NBC Sports digital platforms offer an exclusive look at the walks and judging of every breed-winning canine. Each of the 180 registered breeds are assigned to one of the seven groups representing characteristics and functions for which the breeds were originally bred. The seven group winners compete for Best In Show. The online video will include extensive highlights from the TV special that will be available on desktop, tablets and smart phones. NBC Sports will feature behind-the-scenes photos and video, capturing all of the backstage energy generated by 1,500-plus eager canines. An encore presentation will air on NBC in primetime on Saturday, November 29, from 8-10 p.m. ET.

National Dog Show

For those not familiar with The National Dog Show or who would like to use the dog show as a learning opportunity for your children I recommend downloading the official show program which you can do by clicking the first image in this post. It list the 7 Groups and each Dog that is a member of the Group. The program also talks about what a Dog Show is and how to behave at one if you ever decide to attend one in person. Therapy Dog work is a very important piece of a regular day in the life of many show dogs and the program talks about the connection to the Ronald McDonald House as well as the official Therapy Dog Ambassadors of the show. In the Dog Show world children otherwise known as Junior Handlers are encouraged to learn how to care for dogs and are allowed to show dogs in special classes as a way of building team work and proper animal care as well as allowing the child to build confidence and teach responsibility.

As an incentive to write this post we received a box of goodies from Purina not that we actually need an incentive to write about the National Dog Show – we do it every year! (I am actually so excited about the goodies that we received that they are going to get an entire post to themselves.) I am not being compensated in any other form for helping spread the word about the National Dog Show Presented by Purina and the Purina ProPlan Line. Purina is not responsible for the content of this article.
