Dog Safe Tips: How to Get Rid of Mice and Other Rodents Naturally

If you find mice or other rodents in your home, your first reaction may be to grab poisonous baits to banish them. These baits do work, however they can have tragic results if your dog or a child gets a hold of them. Instead, take a look below at some chemical free ways to get rid of mice and other small rodents instead. These ways are not only effective, they are safe around your children and pets as well.

How to Get Rid of Mice and Other Rodents Naturally

1. Seal all cracks.
Go through your home top to bottom and seal all cracks where mice can enter. Your local home supply store can recommend a product that works best. A simple sealing of cracks can convince the rodents to go elsewhere as entering the home will be a struggle and the warmth they are seeking will stay inside your house instead of getting out and costing you more in heating bills.

2. Keep food closed tightly.
Be sure that all food items are secure in air tight containers. This means cereals and dry goods especially. When you secure these items in air tight containers, rodents are less likely to get a whiff of them and come looking (and dining!) as well.

3. Take away hiding spaces.
Don’t give rodents a place to hide. Keep piles of clothing, garbage, boxes, debris, etc. all cleaned up. The less hiding places you provide, the more likely they are to go elsewhere. This is as important outside as it is inside. Junk around the house will provide homes to all sorts of creatures you probably aren’t interested in keeping as pets. A clean environment is a rodent and pest free environment.

4. Try some peppermint.
Some people swear by the power of peppermint. Take some peppermint oil and place a few drops near areas where mouse droppings are found. Not only will it repel the rodents, but spiders too! It is always great to be able to take care of multiple pests at once.

5. Try traps that allow for catch and release.
If you need to set traps, don’t use sticky traps or poison traps. These can harm your children and your pets. Instead use a trap that catches the mouse and allows you to release them far away from your property. While no one wants a mouse in the house or a rat in the attic treating them like unwelcome guests instead of vermin to be killed on sight will teach your children to steer clear while teaching them that mice and other rodents belong in the woods and not your home.

Don’t get frustrated when dealing with mice, give these tips a try and keep your house rodent free!

  1. Excellent tips. I especially like the Peppermint idea. We have never had a mouse in the house in the 55 years we have been married. We’ve always had a cat, but none of them have been mouse catchers. Apparently we were just lucky – or maybe the mice can smell cat around. Thanks for the tips. I’m writing them down – just in case.

  2. Luckily, cat bro Bert will catch anything, he is a hunter that is trapped indoors. Hopefully he won’t need to catch any mice, though.

  3. I’ll try the peppermint idea. There are some great recipes online using essential oils — I wonder if adding peppermint oil to the mix will also repel critters? BTW – have you ever tried stuffing steel wool in cracks? {Our house was built in 1896, and this was a technique my mother-in-law used in the house for her whole life…} — Be blessed!

  4. Thanks for sharing these natural rodent control tips. If possible, I’d like to get rid of my rat problem without spraying toxic chemicals all over my property. In fact, I think I’ll start checking around the house and make sure all cracks are sealed. The peppermint also might be a good way to get them away from the yard!

  5. Dealing with rodents in your home is not fun. I have never heard of using peppermint before, that sounds interesting. We have tried everything else, and if that doesn’t work, we will just have to call a professional.
