1. Clean away plaque.
Plaque built up on the teeth and gums of your dog can cause odor. Provide hard food whenever possible or crunchy treats for the dog to enjoy. This chewing will help break down some of the plaque and remove the odor with it. Just be careful if your dog is immune-compromised as the plaque coming off their teeth can cause health issues. Speak with your vet and ask what they recommend you do in order to help get rid of dog breath and clean up your dog’s mouth.

2. Get regular cleanings.
Talk to your vet about regular cleanings of your dogs teeth.I am not talking about a dental procedure I am talking about using a toothbrush and dog safe toothpaste to help prevent dental disease.

3. Try a water additive.
There are various additives you can put in your dog’s food and water to help eliminate bad breath. Ask your vet about which ones she can recommend as not all may be safe for your pet. The more natural the product the better for your pet’s overall health though you might have to use something stronger in the beginning to help get thing started on the right track. A little additive may make all of the difference!

4. Avoid human products.
Never try to use human toothpaste or mouthwashes on your dog. They can be dangerous and actually make your dog sick. Only use products approved by a vet and specifically formulated for canine use.

5. Keep the water coming.
If a dog’s mouth gets dry, it will begin to smell. Always have fresh water available so your dog can enjoy a moist mouth. When your dog is a puppy everyone advises to take away the water before bed but you want your dog to go to sleep with as clean a mouth as possible. That means no treats for at least a half hour before bed and water after those treats.

  1. Bad breath can also indicate illness. For example, kidney failure has a ditinctive odor that comes out through the mouth. Also, crunchy treats sometimes helps. In an article I wrote, I explained how crunchy treats will only help clean the surfaces that come into contact with the crunchy treat. Treats and food that are crunchy frequently leave a residue on the teeth which builds up. If we eat crunchy things, our teeth aren’t going to become cleaner. Raw food is more appropriate for dogs and better for their teeth. Raw bones for knawing away are MUCH better for the teeth and MUCH healthier for dogs in general. I wrote about dental care on my website. Just type in the keyword “toothpaste” and it will take you directly. If you are concerned about raw food, you can search for the keyword “raw” or “salmonella” to find articles. My website is essentiallydogs.com.
