Consistency is Key for Dogs

Daily rituals with your dog are a great way to provide consistency in their life and promote some form of routine. Such a routine will always let you dog know what to expect and anticipate next, making him feel more calm and secure in life. Developing daily rituals with your dog can be quite simple. Take a peek below at some helpful tips on how to develop daily rituals with your dog!

Consistency is key for dogs

1. Plan ahead.
For one week, plan ahead to see what your morning routine will look like. Write your plan down on paper to see the basic things you do each morning. This can include getting the paper, having breakfast, or going for a run. It may include all three. Write these tasks down so you can get a good idea of what your own personal routine looks like.

2. Incorporate your dog.
Now, look for ways to incorporate your dog into the routine. Can your dog join you on the run? Can he walk out with you to get the paper? Can he enjoy his favorite treat while you eat breakfast? Find ways to include him.

3. Follow through.
You now want to carry out your daily routine, including the dog as mentioned. This does not need to be lengthy, even just including him in 20 minutes of your morning routine helps.

4. Be consistent.
Now is the time to be consistent. Carry out the rituals daily so your dog gets use to them and begins to anticipate them.

5. Review.
After a few weeks, see how your dog is taking to the ritual. Is he enjoying it? Showing anticipation of it? What about you? Review what is working and adjust what is not.

By developing rituals with your dog, you can best bond and provide a meaningful experience for them as well.

  1. I know my dogs definitely love having a routine. They know when feeding times and walk times are based on our daily routine.

  4. Consistency is something I need; it helps me deal with the hiccups that life throws our way. I know that it’s good for dogs too, but have never really given it too much thought beyond training. But we do have a regular morning, afternoon and evening routine and it’s cool to now realize that our dogs don’t need much prompting to work through our routine.

    Thanks!
