Sun Safety for Your Dog

Just like too much sun can be harmful to humans, too much sun can be harmful to your dog as well. Sun can still cause dehydration, burns, and other health problems if it is not regulated. Take a look below at some helpful tips for providing sun safety for your dog. By following these tips you can enjoy a spring and summer that is a safe one.

1. Consider some SPF
Ask your vet about an SPF product for your dog. You want to especially protect the nose and skin around it when exposing your dog to sun. A simple SPF cream can keep your dog’s face and skin free from burns and damage. Your vet will be able to recommend one for you to try.

2. Provide some shade.
If your dog is going to be outdoors for a lengthy amount of time, always have some shade available. You never want to leave a dog in a play area or yard where there is no refuge from the sun. A simple awning, dog house, or even small tent are all perfect ways to provide your dog with some relief.

3. Keep him hydrated.
If you are going to be enjoying a lot of time in the sun, be sure your dog has access to fresh and cold water. Keeping them hydrated can help you avoid many health problems that dehydration can cause.

4. Opt for morning or afternoon play times and walks.
Avoid mid day (11am – 4pm) sun as it tends to be the hottest. Instead, enjoy playing during the cooler morning or late afternoon hours instead. The sun will be less intense and you don’t have to worry as much about burns or overheating.

When you practice these sun safety tips, you can provide a happier and healthier play time for your dog. Talk to your vet about other sun safety tips she recommends and enjoy a summer that is fun and problem free.
