Waggin Train Reveals New Jerky Products

Waggin Train New Jerky Products

We received an email from Waggin’ Train right before we left for Global Pet Expo asking us if we would like to learn more about the new Waggin’ Train line of Jerky Products. Being curious coupled with the fact that Davinia and Indiana just like so many of our readers dogs really like Jerky I decided that it was important to learn more about the new products. Waggin Train was eager to speak with us and we scheduled the call for the morning before I drove down to Global. I thought of it as a preview of what was about to come. When I scheduled the call I thought that I was going to be speaking with their brand manager about the product but when I received the email confirmation it contained a list of 6 people that would be on the call to speak with me and answer my questions. Talk about thorough they made sure that they could provide the answers to our very hard hitting questions.

Since you probably did not know that Waggin Train has an entirely new line of products I will start with the basics. There are 3 products currently in their brand new line up which hit store shelves in February.

1. Jerky Duos – Made and Sourced in the USA
2. Smokey Jerky Snacks – Made and Sourced in the USA
3. Chicken Jerky Tenders Sourced from a US Company that has chicken farms in China and operates following USDA Guidelines.

All of the new jerky products are made from Real Simple High Quality Ingredients. Waggin Train now has the highest quality control in the industry when it comes to testing their jerky treats in fact if you have any questions you are welcome to ask them directly to company representatives you can visit the website they have created specifically to answer your questions 24 hours a day

I know you are going to ask so I will answer it for you. The two treats that are made in the US are made from dark meat chicken because it is easier to source and find a supply that will allow the brand to sell the product at a cost that their consumer can purchase the product at. The Chicken Jerky Tenders are sourced in China where the dark meat is prized and the white meat is easier to source and keep at a cost that their consumer can afford. The chicken farm that the chickens come from is one single farm and Purina has 25 of their own employees overseeing daily operations. To ensure the quality of the product and its passing muster of the highest quality control in the industry Waggin Train has a locked up all of the supplies from this facility and they watch it from egg to chicken to production factory in order to ensure bio security and the supply chain.

Now on to our thoughts about the products. We received one bag of each of the treats for Davinia and Indiana to check out. We started with the Jerky Duos because chicken and sweet potatoes are two favorites and they happen to be the first two ingredients for this treat. Before I could even break the treat apart to give to them I looked down and saw these faces looking back at me begging for a treat. Yes that is Indiana with the stink eyes because I had the treat in my hand and it didn’t get to her mouth fast enough. She loves her food and treats.

Davinia loved her treat and so did Indiana. Davinia is my picky eater while Indiana is the one that eats anything not bolted down. It is a good thing that I broke one treat into 4 pieces because they were finished with the first and ready for a second treat in no time. We don’t normally eat treats outside but it is hard to take pictures inside so we had treat time on the balcony. I could have broken the treat into more pieces and I have since these pictures.

Davinia and Indiana eating a treat

Davinia and Indiana have since checked out the Chicken Jerky Tenders each getting a Cavalier size piece as a treat and both completely approved. We still need to check out the Smokey Jerky Snacks but we lost a week of new treat tasting because I was away. Not to fear I am sure that we will give those a try soon too. I mentioned that when given a treat the girls are given size appropriate pieces.

Did you know that treats and other snacks should only make up 10% of your dog’s daily diet?

Here is the back of the bag for you to take a look at. Since this was not going to be their only treat of the day (they have a new game where everytime we come in from playign in the yard they want a treat) they each received a half of a Jerky Duo. They weigh about 15lbs each and so a full treat with other small treats throughout the day would have been too much for them.

  1. Good for them, but after the China thing, it is hard to trust them at this point. I think we will wait until we buy their products again.

    • I am going to wait too. It concerns me that one of their products is still made in China. I could avoid that one but still…I don’t know what to think.

  2. Your babies are soooo cute! My boys love jerky and I would definitely try the ones made in the USA! Thanks for the information and it does sound as if they are trying to make sure the products are safe.

  4. We fed our dogs Waggin’ Dogs treats before we learned about the connection to China and saw them listed on recall lists. Today, I’m not 100% certain if those lists were correct, because there was an meme going around that just listed all the treat companies who sourced in China.

Fortunately for our dogs, the news stories about the China sourced treats have taught me to check where our treats our sourced, because it is important to me. I also appreciate brands who are straight forward about this and seek to educate us.

Although I will not buy Waggin’ Train treats, because of the China connection and other reasons, I appreciate that when I called the to confirm where their treats were sourced, the customer service rep was polite, patient, and educated me about their process.

I don’t see many companies doing this.
