Homemade Sweet Potato Cinnamon Dog Treats
Every dog owner wants to give their dogs the best they can and will sometimes drive miles and miles to get the food or treats their dog likes best because they don't realize they can make treats for their dogs. These dog treats don't have to be difficult to make and often use ingredients you have in the pantry already. Heck sometimes with the addition of a little extra sweetener you can make half the batch for your dog and half the batch for you!

Total time:
Ingredients
  • 1 medium-sized sweet potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1¼ cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Place the peeled and diced sweet potato in a pot and submerge with cold water. Bring to a boil, then simmer until the pieces have softened.
  2. Strain the the sweet potatoes, allow to cool, then mash.
  3. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, egg, vegetable oil, and milk. Whisk well to combine.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and cinnamon.
  6. Slowly add the flour mixture to the sweet potato mixture, mixing to incorporate.
  7. Grease a baking pan with pan spray. Spoon small amounts of the mixture onto the greased baking pan, creating the “pillows.”
  8. Bake at 350°F for 25-35 minutes, or until the pillows have puffed slightly and begin to brown.
  9. Allow to cool before serving to your pet.
Notes
Your dog will go crazy while these are baking. Dogs love baked sweet potato and cinnamon is unbelievably enticing. Which means the combination of the two cooking in the over will have your dog hovering waiting for a taste. Make sure they cannot get too close to the oven and that when these come out piping hot that if your dog cannot wait a few minutes make sure to break one of these sweet potato cinnamon dog treats apart and blow on it before giving it to your dog.

When you’re spooning the batter onto the baking tray, you can arrange them fairly closely together as they will not expand much; these Sweet Potato Cinnamon Dog Treats will however rise slightly like a pillow.

Sweet Potato Cinnamon Dog Treats

We know the questions are going to come up so we will answer them before they do. Is cinnamon toxic to dogs? No cinnamon is not toxic to dog, cats, or horses. Yes your cat might enjoy these treats just as much as your dog. I know my parents cat would go crazy for these. She loves sweet potato ok she loves all potato. In fact if you leave a cooked potato on the counter and her in the room unsupervised she will eat it. She is an indoor outdoor cat she spends her days hunting and climbing trees and her nights cozy inside the house.

Since we mention cinnamon being safe for horses I looked up the other ingredients and it looks like you could give these Sweet Potato Cinnamon pillows (yeah we changed the name because who wants to give a horse a dog treat?) to your horse. I do caution that you do so only in moderation as changes in food can upset their stomach but one of these broken into a few pieces and given throughout the day would be fine. That is if your horse doesn’t eat it right out of your pocket.

My doggy loves cookies made on this recipe:
    Ingredients:
    6 cups whole wheat flour
    1 1/2 Tbsp baking soda
    1 tbsp ground ginger
    2 tsp cinnamon
    3/4 c applesauce
    3/4 c molasses
    1/2 c honey
    1/4 c vegetable oil
    1 egg, beaten

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.Combine all of the ingredients in your mixer with a dough hook. Turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it out to 1/4 inch thick.
Cut it with cookie cutter or simply with a pizza cutter. Place them on cookie sheets and poke each in the center with a fork.
Bake for 8 minutes and turn oven off, keeping oven door closed. Let the treats sit in the oven until hard about 1-2 hours.

Thank you so much for offering such a great recipe!!! Our Shih Tzu mix, Daisy Bean Fluffbottom, had terrible dental issues (due to previous owners not caring for her). Last year she ended up having an abscessed tooth and had to have ALL of her teeth removed to save her life! She is also allergic to chicken and peanut butter so finding a SOFT treat with NO peanut butter or chicken is challenging!

I made your treats pretty small (I was able to get approx. 60 treats out of the batch) and adjusted the time to 20 minutes instead of 25-35 minutes. Let me just say, these little pillows of deliciousness are DAISY APPROVED!

    Thanks again! 🙂
    Holly (& Daisy)

    • We are so happy to hear that your little Daisy loves them! Glad you found the recipe and could make something that agrees with her and is soft enough for her to enjoy. So sad about her teeth but glad she found you to care for her.

We are about to make another batch of these wonderful treats but I was wondering if we could add a little canned salmon to the recipe? Do you think that would work or do you think they won’t bake properly?

        Thanks!
        Holly

  13. Okay, this might be a duplicate comment but I think my other one got deleted. Anyways – I love this recipe. So simple and no flour whatsoever involved! I will have to sub out the milk for almond milk or something nondairy though as my dogs seem to be lactose intolerant. Sharing 🙂
