Newfound Friends Perform Water Rescues

Newfoundland showing off his rescue skills
I was searching for a video to feature for this week’s post when I came across this video of Newfoundland Dogs showcasing their water rescue skills. I thought that was really cool in and of itself and then I realized that these gentle giants were a part of a group called Newfound Friends that do these displays in order to raise money for various children’s charities across the UK. In case you thought that wasn’t enough they also happen to be trained therapy dogs who visit children in hospitals when they are sick and even take time out of their schedule to make follow up visits once the children return home! We think these are some pretty special dogs and deserve some attention.

Newfound Friends was formed 23 years ago in 1990, with the objective of using the skills of the Newfoundland Dog to raise money for Children’s Charities. To date they have raised over a million pounds to help support children. The dogs carry out therapeutic work with seriously ill children who attend hospices and home from home cancer care establishments as well as working with local Life Guard Trainees to help motivate them and challenge them to work harder to become truly exceptional lifeguards. Newfoundland dogs are gentle giants and excel at water rescue and lifesaving because of their muscular build, thick double coat, webbed feet and swimming ability. The Royal Life Saving Society has honored the dogs for their lifesaving skills and promotion of water safety. The dogs of Newfound Friends are the only dogs ever to attain such awards of commendation from the society.

  5. LOVED THE VIDEO! Love the Newfies also.I feel bad for them when they are left out in hot weather.Bet thats never happened to these guys!

  6. Newfs are such wonderful water dogs. We had a friend with one that could never go in the water if the Newf was around as he would go in and pull the owner out of the water all the time.

  7. I have 3 dogs of my own and I am continually amazed at their intelligence and their ability to sync with human beings so well. They are definitely here to take up the slack that we have as far as our limitations. These dogs are to be applauded and given the same press as humans that are heroes in this life. We need to treat them well and with the respect they deserve.
