In Memory of Dog

In Memory of Dog

Dear Dog,

I hope this letter finds you happy, playing, running, and enjoying the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the Rainbow Bridge. It is true that I didn’t know and I don’t know that you were ever anyone’s pet. All I know is that by the time we crossed paths you had to have been at the Rainbow Bridge for a while. I don’t want to guess where you came from or how you found yourself in the middle of a highway where traffic goes 80 miles per hour but you did. I don’t want to imagine how it happened  or what you knew as it was happening but the results are the same you were at the Rainbow Bridge before we crossed paths. Sure I have seen dead dogs and all sorts of other animals domestic and wild dead on the side of the street but you effected me. And it will be you who haunts me tonight when I close my eyes to go to sleep. Without getting too graphic there was not much left in the road by the time I passed you to even identify you if someone went looking which means that it falls on me to remember you. There is nothing that I can do to help you now from whatever it was that happened to you that caused you to wind up at the Rainbow Bridge.

I hope that it happened in a split second where one blink of an eye you were crossing the road and the next you were being welcomed to the Rainbow Bridge. I don’t want to imagine it any other way because it is just too horrific to consider. I want to believe that all of the parts of your story that caused our paths to meet were accidents and not something that could have been prevented. It never gets too hot or too cold at the Rainbow Bridge and there is food for all of the animals there. I hope you find some friends to play and run together and then cuddle with for naps. I hope that you did know love, have a regular full belly, and a warm bed to sleep in at night. From now on that is all you will know any any pain or horror are gone form your memory.

I think we crossed paths when we did to remind me that I need to continue to educate people so that they can live long, happy, and healthy lives with their dogs and not have horrific events like happened to you continue. It falls on me to make sure that the rural shelters and rescues can continue to help as many animals as possible so they don’t meet your fate. It is up to me to help promote awareness that dogs don’t belong in the bed of pick up trucks. It is up to me to let people know that when they have their dog in the car should not leave the window open enough that you or any of your friends could jump out. It is up to me to remind people that if they can no longer take care of their dog that they need to find it a safe new home or turn it over to the local shelter to help place. I know that we crossed paths for a reason and from now on I will work harder to help your friends so they don’t meet the same fate that you did.

It is in memory of you Dog that we will create an official partnership with Rabun Paws 4 Life. I know we didn’t cross paths anywhere near where they are located but they are an organization that I think I can offer the most to. Whether it is fostering another litter of kittens or creating graphics that can be shared as reminders so that what happened to you does not happen to others or helping them to raise money so that they can take in more of your friends and get them off the street the are the ones that we choose.

In Memory of Dog we pledge to make time each week to do something to help Rabun Paws 4 Life continue their journey to help animals in need – one animal at a time.
