Simple Ways You Can Help Your Local Animal Shelter

How You Can Help Your Local Animal Shelter

We are starting something new here at Two Little Cavaliers it is our ay to help as many Animal Shelters as possible. We know that you, our readers, followers, and fans, all want to help your local shelter or favorite rescue but you just don’t have room for another animal in your house or can’t foster because you are out of town too often. You also run all around town daily for work, taking your children to after school activities, taking your dog to training classes, and are active in your community that you really don’t have a regular time that you can devote to helping out at your local shelter. Or you feel like the minute you walk in you will want to take all the animals home with you and so you avoid going because you just don’t want to have to say no.

There are so many ways you can help your local shelter without having to step foot inside or at least not past the front desk. Your local shelter and favorite Rescue are always in need of food, treats, toys, bowls, grooming products, and so much more for the animals in their care. You might only see a Facebook post when they are dangerously low on food but that doesn’t mean that your random donation isn’t just as needed. Often we just don’t know what the shelter needs. Or we think 1 of something is not enough to help when the Animal Shelter has over 110 animals in their care. But every item does matter. A stuffed animal for that dog that is depressed in the back of the kennel, a tennis ball for the energetic 1 year old to chase after in the yard, some balls for the kittens to paw around their crate. You are making a difference for that one animal. That animal in tern is happier and when the next adopter walks through the door they see an animal they want to add to their family. 1 small thing can make a difference. And remember your local shelter likely helps out community members that cannot afford to feed their pets for one reason or another and in order to keep them from being turned over to the Animal Shelter they are provided food, treats, and other basic necessities.

We have decided to dedicate our Thursdays to telling you about products available for under or around $5 that you don’t have to run to the store to pick up or remember the next time you dash through the pet store between picking up at ballet and dropping off at football. All of these items are available via Amazon which means they are a few clicks away from your mailbox or a direct shipment to your shelter or rescue of choice. Our thinking is that you can order a few items every so often and then bring a big box of goodies to your shelter once a month or once every few months. I am sure it happens all the time that you go to buy a book via amazon and you are $8 short for super saver shipping but the other book you want is another $20 and you just don’t want to spend that. This way you can add a leash, or bag of treats, or chew toy to your order and start your very own shelter donation box. You get the free shipping and the dogs and cats in your area benefit.

Each week our list will be different so make sure you visit us each week and share the list with your friends via, Facebook, Twitter, Email, so that they can start their shelter donation box as well.

I totally agree with Amy, I will keep this in mind when I order from Amazon. I am so glad I found your website. Sometimes you would like to help but don’t really know how. This site gives us some great and inexpensive ideas.

  3. My local humane society has an amazon wishlist that is made public so its really easy to tell what items they are in need of – not sure how common it might be for other shelters to have something similar but its worth checking for.

  4. I wish our humane society was closer as we would do a lot more with them. We do donate often when we go to the store. They have that round up program on the bill and then bins where you can donate to local organizations.

  9. One thing that we do is take them towels and blankets that we don’t use anymore. Considering how many towels we go through when we bathe our dogs, we thought they’d be better off at a shelter than at Good will.

Another thing I recently learned is that a few local shelters and rescue groups hold annual garage sales – they take everything for the sale and all proceeds go to their cause. I have 100 books that I no longer read that I’m taking to a shelter this weekend.

  10. What an awesome idea! I am definitely going to participate in this ongoing challenge to help out our local shelters! Well…”challenge” is probably not the right word because I’m going to have a lot of fun buying the little goodies that you recommended! I have always felt so guilty that because of time and financial reasons, I have been unable to help out the shelter that brought Taylor into my life as much as I want to! This program is sooo do-able for me! Little by little, I can a create a care package for our shelter that I and Taylor would be so proud to deliver once a month!

  11. Really great post with great ideas! I like the idea of doing goodie boxes with various items, because sometimes you never really know what they’re needing at the moment (without calling). Giving them a little bit of everything, they’re surely to get something they’re short on. Will definitely be sharing!
