Therapy Dog Visits Prison Inmates Officials See Positive Impact

Therapy Dog Visits Prison Inmates

Therapy Dogs Adventures with Bailey

In a first for the Adventures with Bailey Therapy Dog Organization and the prison system in Lake County a therapy dog visited the Lake County Corrections Center. Therapy dogs regularly visit schools, hospitals, sick home bound children but it is rare for a prison to call on the services of Therapy Dogs and for a dog and its handler to agree to the visit.

The therapy dog named Kubla Khan, a 155-pound Leonburger along with his visited the female inmates at the Lake County Community Based Corrections Center on June 19th. During and after Kubla Khan’s visit, there was a noticeable reduction in tension and attitude inside the jail facility, according to the sheriff’s press release. The idea for a Therapy Dog visit came from Burnett County jail in Wisconsin where they started having regular visits by therapy dogs with some very positive results for both staff and inmates. The hope from prison officials was that it would help their own inmates become less aggressive, more cooperative, and have a better attitude. Just one visit from the giant dog seemed to have gone above and beyond officials expectations.

Kubla Khan’s visit had such a positive impact on inmates during and after Kubla Khan’s visit, that Therapy Dogs could become regular visitors at Lake County Community Corrections Center according to the local sheriff’s office.
