Maddie’s Fund Pet Adoption Days In NYC June 1st – 2nd

The Maddie’s Fund mission is to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals. Maddie’s Fund® is a family foundation endowed by the founder of Workday® and PeopleSoft, Dave Duffield and his wife, Cheryl. Maddie’s Fund is helping to achieve and sustain a no-kill nation by providing solutions to the most challenging issues facing the animal welfare community through the combined efforts of Maddie’s Grant Giving, Maddie’s Center (hands-on animal care), and Maddie’s Institute (research and education).

Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days has been a free pet adoption weekend in California for the last three years. Maddie’s® Pet Adoption Days is held each year to increase awareness of shelter animals and their need for loving homes and to shed light on the tireless efforts of the shelters and rescue organizations across the country that work so hard to save the lives of countless dogs and cats every day. This is the first time the event is going national taking place the weekend of June 1.

The event in New York City is being “Presented by the Mayor’s Alliance” (a consortium of NY area shelters and rescues). Adoptions are free however all regular pre-qualification and pre-screenings are still in place, in other words, “free adoptions to qualified homes.” The event is meant to motivate those already thinking about pet adoption to make the decision to adopt during this weekend with “free adoption” as a call-to-action.

Maddie’s Fund will pay a subsidy for all qualifying dog and cat adoptions over the two-day period at a reimbursement rate ranging from $500 to $2,000 per adoption. In the past, the event has been successful in driving adoption especially for pets with medically treatable conditions and seniors. The current goal is to “empty the shelters/rescues” participating that would mean having 1,000 animals adopted over the period of that weekend in NYC (and 5,000 pets adopted Nationally).
