Beware of Dog Signs

Beware of Dogs

I am involved in a debate in a private Facebook Group and I would love to have your opinion. The question is Does having a Beware of Dogs Sign on your fence or house mean that if something happens to someone who enters your yard / home that it is your fault for having dangerous dogs since you are warning others of them? Basically that the sign means you know your dogs are dangerous and have the potential to harm an intruder. Or does the sign mean there are dogs on the property / in the house and therefore anyone friend or foe that enters should take proper precautions? None of the people in the group have dangerous dogs most of the people in the group have highly Socialized dogs that say hello to strangers with a tail wag.

My take on it is if you have a “Beware of Dogs” Sign on your fence that I whether friend or foe should take precaution in case they are loose in the yard. As long as those dogs are family dogs and remain on your property I don’t think you should be any more at fault then someone that has a dog but no sign. But apparently by putting the sign up we are saying that the dog is dangerous and therefore if it attacks for any reason you are at fault.

I was told that I should put up a “dogs on premises” sign to alert people to the fact that a dog may be loose outside or inside. But my feeling on that is especially with small dogs that attract a lot of attention out on walks that I don’t want to advertise to a would be thief that there are dogs on the property. It is one thing if on the other side of the fence is a Rottweiler with a big giant head and a little tail wagging a million miles an hour someone who is not supposed to be entering your property will just see the big head and not the wagging tail. If on the other hand a cute little dog comes running to the fence even if the dog is snarling and snapping at the would be intruder they would probably pick it up and take it along with the tv, computer, and jewelry.

Personally I want to put up a sign that says Beware of Dogs because I wouldn’t want anyone on my property that doesn’t belong and if they are thinking about it I want them to think harder that just because they only saw two small dogs or heard there are two small dogs there might be a big brother or sister dog guarding the house.

What do you think Beware of Dog or Dog on Premises?

  1. I know a lot of people with Greyhounds who put up a beware of dogs sign because they don’t want strangers opening their gates. A Greyhound can be lost in a matter of minutes if it runs out of a gate at a high rate of speed. However, if you’ve ever met a Greyhound, you know that they are the least likely dog to bite someone. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but they aren’t protective or vicious by nature. So, people put up those “beware of dog” signs for their own protection. Heck, some people put those signs up who don’t even have a dog. If some lone nut gets in your back yard and a vicious dog happens to be in there, while you have a sign up, I still don’t think that makes you liable. If someone is in a place where they don’t belong, it doesn’t matter what sign is or isn’t posted. Maybe the safer bet would be to put up a “No Trespassing” sign and leave it at that.

The converse is that while we have two Greyhounds, we also have two German Shepherds. One of them might wag or lick you to death, but he’s the epitome of a good old boy. Our female means business, though, and if someone comes in who’s not supposed to be here, I think they would meet the business end of her teeth. When people come over, we remove her to a place where it’s not going to be an issue. That’s for her protection, ours and our guests. I think if you know your dog, you know what precautions to take. If someone doesn’t listen to any clearly placed warning, perhaps they get what they deserve.

  2. Hi Y’all!

Check with a local attorney or check your state law regarding these signs.
Years ago a friend and attorney had us remove one, stating that we are admitting we know our dog is dangerous and therefore liability if one of our dogs injures someone, even a trespasser.

Since then we have lived in other countries and a number of different states, I’ve been told in a couple of places that it only warns of dogs on property…none the less, we’ve never put a sign up.

Perhaps get a sign that doesn’t say “beware”…simply one that says…dogs inside or please close gate…dogs in yard. Anything that doesn’t sound like a warning that the dog is dangerous.

Thanks for hosting another great Saturday blog hop!

  3. I think the reason the owner puts the sign up is always different. I know of people who put the sign up to make people afraid meaning that it is less likely for their dogs to be stolen. However people do put up signs because their dogs are actually dangerous. Some people even put them up as a joke. So I think it depends on the situation.

  4. Happy Saturday, Felissa!

Gosh, you know it’s true people put up those signs for a whole bunch of different reasons…it kinda makes the sign lose all its meaning, in a way. I know one neighbor here had a “Beware of Dog” sign and had a big Rottie…meet that Rottie while on a walk and it was the sweetest, but when it was in its yard…it thought it was on “duty”.

I have to agree with Hawk…maybe there is someone or someplace to check on the meaning/liability/etc. Better to be safe than sorry.

  5. I’m am Animal Control Officer. I advise people NOT to put “Beware of Dog” signs on their property for liability reasons. (I had an attorney advise me of this.) He told me that these signs “imply” that you know your dog is dangerous and should something happen any decent inury attorney will push it. Even worse are the “Bad Dog” and “Guard Dog” signs people post on their fences. Have you seen these? I was told by a prominant dog-bite expert (and retired police officer) to put up a “No Tresspassing” sign instead. Here in Florida if someone is illegally on your property and your dog bites them, it doen not fit the “Dangerous Dog” requirements. And there’s a good chance you won’t be held liable for any injuries.

I like the “Dog on Premises” signs, especially if they’re combined with “Please make sure gate is closed.” I think that adequately alerts people that there is a dog but makes no implications of danger.

  6. I don’t think I’d put up a Beware of Dog sign after reading the other comments. A few relatives have No Trespassing signs around their farms, and you can see one sign on either side of the one in front of you. If you’re on their land and anything happens, you can’t say you weren’t warned not to be there! 🙂

  7. The local ordinance officers in several states that I have met advise not to put a beware sign but as someone mentioned above the no trespassing sign. My thinking is that if you need a sign for your pooch as greyhounds and even us lab and german shorthair pointers sometimes do then, how bout any of the following:
Rocket propelled pooch inside, please keep the gate closed.
I can reach this gate in 2.2. seconds, can you?
Hello, I live here, do you?
Houdini was my cousin, keep the gate closed.
Beware of owner, dog not so much.

  8. Lauralee Hensley says

Well we have a guard dog sign, because we have an actual guard dog. Our fenced back yard has locked gates. The propane company knows to call before pulling into the drive to fill the propane tank so that we can get the dog secured inside. We made them aware of this. We’ve made the mail carriers and the delivery services (Fed Ex and UPS) aware of such. They honk their horns after they’ve left the packages on the porch. We have an electronic peep hole thing on our front door, so we can look out to see who is ringing our door bell and so we can secure the dogs before opening the door bell. The small min pin likes to blot out sometimes and we are afraid he can get hit by a car, the large guard dog minds his commands very well, but the trainer says one can never be 100% sure of any dog large or small. I think locks, precautions and signs are needed, as well as informing those people who routinely come to your home. People need a chance to make an informed decision. Our dogs have never hurt anyone and we are even the corner where the school buses drop off and pick up the kids on this block. Our dogs do bark to inform us if someone is stopped on the side of our home (which is good because we can’t see out of the house on that side). That way we can go out in the backyard and look around to that side of the house. I even called the deputies once because there was a car hanging around that I didn’t recognize and it was getting close to the time that a school bus would be dropping off morning kindergarteners to go home. The car had out of state plates, a strange looking man in it. I didn’t recognize him. Phoned in the make, model of car and license plate etc., but had to leave for Dr. appt.. Was later told by a deputy that the car was stolen from another state and that they were looking for a guy matching that description that had molested a child in another state. However the guy must have seen me because he was gone before the deputy had arrived to check out the car. I think signs are a good thing for people who aren’t going to do anything bad, but I think they may also be a deterent for someone who might be thinking about such. Yet, if you live somewhere where there is a person who likes to poison dogs it may put your dogs at risk. We did have a problem in our community a few years back with a dog poisoner, so at that time we took down our signs until they arrested the person responsible.

  9. Dogs can live 27 years! The best thing you can do for your dog is to give them healthy food. you can find healthy homemade food recipes please don’t give them commercial food.

  10. I think we are blinkered by our love for our pets. I am a dog lover but still I can’t ignore the risks. Everybody knows the dogs have bone breaking power in their jaws.

  11. I found a police trained Doberman after having my home broken into twice. I also have ADT security, which is of only limited use because the bad guys know that it will take police at least thirty minutes to respond. The police who responded to my alarm told me that. Plenty of time for a creep to clean you out. When shopping for home owner’s insurance I was asked if I had a dog and the breed. The insurance industry classifies a Doberman as a “dangerous” dog. Yes, dangerous to intruders that is why I have him. My insurance rate went through the roof. It’ s absurd that you can be liable for displaying a ‘Beware of dog’ sign on your locked gated fence. The insurance industry will give you a tiny break for the ADT sign on your lawn. They never asked if I was a licensed gun owner! If the home security sign and the beware of dog sign does not deter an intruder maybe a 9mm will. I even thought about placing anti-climb spikes on my fence with signs announcing their presence, but that is illegal too.
