Puppies for Sale – Things You Should Know Before Buying a new Puppy

Puppies for Sale

You want a new puppy and don’t know how to begin your search. So you hear through a friend of a friend about a pet store in your community that has some cute white fluffy puppies for sale. Before you shop for your puppy there are some things you need to know about Pet Stores.

Pet Stores no longer sell locally raised puppies like they once did. They buy puppies from a distributor that works with large scale mass factory farms called puppy mills whose sole purpose is to breed puppies for profit. The stores might tell you they are local puppies but if you ever convince them to show you the puppy’s papers local means 6 states away or in some cases imported from Ireland or Poland. Not exactly a puppy born locally.

Ask them how old the puppies for sale are today and they will tell you one number go back in tomorrow and it will be another number. Then factor that in with how long they claim to have had the puppy for. Add to that number at least 2 or 3 days in transit in a cage stuffed in an 18 wheeler now how old was that puppy when it was taken from its mother?

Puppies should never leave their mother’s before 8 weeks of age no matter what breed they are. Smaller breeds shouldn’t really leave home before 12 weeks. They need that time to grow and learn how to be puppies. They need their mother to teach them how to behave and need to learn how to play nicely with their siblings. It is also a time of mental development. They are newborn infants and while we can love them and provide them with food and shelter and care they need more time to develop in their mother’s care. They need a place where the puppies and their mother are protected from the elements, where they are kept clean and mom given fresh food and clean water regularly and taken out to potty while their puppies stay warm (or cool) inside. Where if mom is not keeping them clean enough there is someone who has loved them from the moment they were conceived to help keep them clean and take to them to the vet and get them vaccinations on time. This extra time with mom and siblings will not have a negative effect on your ability to bond with the puppy or their training. In fact having that extra few weeks will allow your puppy to develop in a way that will allow them to bond more strongly with you, be more socialized, and better able to process their environment.

Puppies and their mothers need a clean calm environment to mature properly. At the factory farms (puppy mills) they are born in a cage and are never taken out for a bath or to play in the yard. They aren’t played with or handled with love and care. They stay in the cage with their mother until they are taken from them way too young and shipped out across the country.

Never take home a puppy where you cannot first see where it was born and learned to socialize and play. Never ever take home a puppy that you cannot see the puppy with its mother and siblings and if applicable the other family dogs. Factory Farms would never invite you over to see their facilities. They would never allow you to see the mother dogs and the other puppies they are producing. That is why they use middle men to ship their puppies all over the country to places with names like puppy nursery or puppy palace or puppies and kittens for you where the puppies are kept in baby cribs or baby play pens. Where everything is bright white or pink and blue you are given an experience and you pay for that experience both in cost of the puppy and in that puppy’s health.

The truth is no one even knows if the puppy is healthy they haven’t really seen a vet and if they have it is one who has been paid to give them a clean bill of health not one who cares first and foremost for the puppy. The puppy doesn’t know how to potty outside or what grass is because they still at 6, 7, 8 weeks have never seen grass in their lives. They haven’t really been able to learn how to be a puppy because they spent the first few weeks of their lives living in a dirty crate with their mother and then at the store they are kept with puppies who also had no guidance from their mothers.

A pet store that has puppies for sale is the very last place you want to get a new puppy from – a puppy that you want to be around a very long time to love and love you that you want to be happy and healthy.

  1. Great post. Sadly so many people just ignore the truth because they want the instant gratification a pet store provides.

In my area, every street corner gets plastered with those signs you poke in the grass (like political signs). It has a huge PUPPIES!!!! across it, then an 800 number. Plus in smaller print “MaltiPoo, YorkiePoo, Puggle, plus many others!”

I so want to have large stickers made that I can paste catty-corner over their message that says ” Say NO to Puppy Mills” and run around all over the neighborhood covering up the signs.

  4. Great article! We came across a litter of Chihuahua pups, several of us adopted one, most of the litter ended up dying though. (Ours survived), even with vet care. They were so wormy that it killed them. So make sure your pup is worm free. I’ve never picked up so many worms in my life, and they were huge even though she was only 5 weeks old! 😮

  5. My best tip is to always consider the question “Will this be cute when they are adult dogs” If the answer is no then don’t let the puppy do it.

NEVER BUY PUPPIES AT THE PET STORE IS MY MOTTO!

  8. There are so many dogs and puppies available at shelters. I try and share posts from rescues across the country and see pregnant dogs or dogs that have just had litters all the time.

  9. Thanks for the great tips. I have never thought of any of these tips. I usually get a pet from the SPCA because there are many animals that are in need of a good home and I just feel so bad for them. It’s a shame how some people treat their animals. Thanks again for the tips. I will keep them all in mind if I ever decide to get a puppy.

I cna’t wait to get a puppy! We’re waiting for our house to go up …..this spring. A dog should suit their owner ( active owner active dog).

  15. When buying a puppy we decided to use the local humane society instead of a breeder because of all the puppy mills talks

  16. I think these tips are great. I think too many times people rush into buying a puppy without fully thinking it through!

  19. I’m so glad you made this post, as a shelter worker I wish more people knew what went on ‘behind the scenes’ when you see puppies in pet stores-and everyone should adopt!!! I heard recently that in LA (I think I’m correct), but they banned the sale of puppies in pet stores in one area-a seemingly small victory-but it’s a start. Thank you!

  20. If you can adopt instead of a pet shop, there are too many wonderful pets waiting for a home

  22. Pet stores and puppy mills make me so angry!! Fortunately, 3 of the 5 big puppy-selling pet stores in my area closed down 🙂 WOO! Now if only Petland would…

Fantastic post! We’ve had several puppies over the years…but as the kids have gotten older, the dogs we end up adopting have been older, “less visually appealing” lol.. we go to the shelters, etc… and we like the “under dogs”!

I bought a puppy at a pet store twenty-something years ago when I was younger but I wouldn’t now. There are so many great animals at your local pound that need a good home. I am so against people breeding dogs just to make money. More people need to know this kind of information.

  25. Sandra Smith says

I don’t ever buy dogs or cats at the pet store. There is more than enough animals needing homes for free.
