The Poodle and the Pea – Book Review

The Poodle and the Pea: A review

The Poodle and the Pea

My son loves everything about dogs, big or small he loves them all. We talk about puppas, we sing about puppas, we play with puppas, we even read lots and lots of books about puppas.

So when the opportunity came to review the newest book in the Animal Fairy Tales series, The Poodle and the Pea, we jumped at the opportunity.

This is a retelling of the classic “The Princess and the Pea” except all the characters are in this case poodles. As a mom and an artist, I have to say that I adored the illustrations. They are bright, colorful and definitely capture the sometimes haughty air and personality of the poodle breed.

My son who had not heard the original tale loved the pictures and the story but, was concerned that the pea would make a mess under all those blankets. He laughed when we got to the end of the book and saw the wedding feast. Then, five minutes later, he asked to read it again. Two hours later, I want to read poodle book.

I think this little book will be quite a hit.

This book is appropriate for kids three to seven years of age. I heartily recommend this book for both independent readers and those who still enjoy being read to at bedtime. As an educator, I could easily see this being used in a classroom setting as part of a fairy tale reading unit. This would also make a great gift for the friend with a poodle.

The Poodle and the Pea will be released on February 1, 2013 by Capstone Young Readers just in time for Valentine’s Day. You can pre-order it right now so when it becomes available it will be shipped directly to your house!
