Dog-ma the Zen of Slobber

Once I got into this book I thought it was really good but I almost never made it past the first chapter. The truth is that if wasn’t sent the book for review I would have returned it to the bookstore. Dog-Ma the Zen of Slobber starts off by describing all out vicious fights between two of the authors dogs. Ok all out attacks by the authors smallest dog leading another one to protect itself. For those of you who have been fans of ours for a while now you know that Two Little Cavaliers started while Davinia was under 24 hour a day medical care due to getting attacked and that the only times we have discussed that attack they have come with a warning stating that the post is graphic. But no warning came with this chapter its how you are introduced to the book and the truth is it was completely unnecessary where it was the book wasn’t about these fights there was so much more life and love before the instigator even comes into her life. It certainly didn’t endear me to the story or make me want to read more about the story of the author’s life with her dogs. My opinion is that if you are going to read this book to rip out the introduction and start with the first chapter. You will not have missed anything and actually enjoy the book.

Dog-Ma the Zen of Slobber

I am going to write the rest of this review as if I hadn’t read the introduction. I think this is a great book for people who are considering adding a dog to their family. It tells stories of how your life will change completely in order to care for an animal but also change because of all the love that same animal will give to you. Dog-Ma the Zen of Slobber recounts the lives of the dogs that have shared their lives with the author and her husband. It talks about their destroying expensive couches and furniture during teething and steeling food off the counter if it wasn’t guarded closely enough. It talks about health issues they each individually faced and how they treated each issue with expensive surgery or medications in order to give the dogs the best possible quality of life. I liked that it went into detail and without giving exact numbers said that these medications and procedures are expensive and something people should consider before bringing a dog into their lives. But the truth is even the most loving family might not have the financial means to care for a hurt, diseased, or injured dog in the way the author was able. In that respect the fact that she did use her money to care for the dogs with the best procedures and medications modern medicine could provide is something not everyone would do while others would go into debt in order to provide any chance at a better life for their pets.

The author shares her experiences with raising her dogs from puppy hood through old age and helping to them to the rainbow bridge. The book shows in real honest detail the difference between breeds and how they change the dynamic in a home when they are all put together. Dog-Ma the Zen of Slobber talks about the love and heartache that a dog can bring to your life.

A lot of stories start out that way. I watched an episode of “Criminal Minds” last night that started really strange by having a bedridden patient berate a nurse that really had no bearing on the story whatsoever. Anyhow, thanks for the heads up.

  2. Thanks for the warning. I’ll pass on it because I get too upset.

  3. Love the name of the book. I’ll keep it in mind if any friends bring up adopting a dog or getting a dog

  4. Thanks for the warning. It’s a shame the story started out that way, especially as it had no relevance really to the rest of the story. It sounds like the kind of book that would move me to tears for various reasons… I dunno if I could read it LOL

  7. I have never read a book centered around an animal other than classics like Old Yeller or the Black Stallion. You always introduce such interesting topics to me.
