Black Bean Turkey Burgers

Black Bean Turkey Burgers Cooking for Dogs

We’re making Black Bean turkey burgers at Casa de Kolchak!

We’ve always been fond of turkey at our house, but sometimes turkey burgers can lack a bit of flavour. We decided to jazz things up by making a turkey burger influenced by one of our favourite foods: Burritos.

Made with ground turkey, black beans and brown rice, the patty is a bit richer than your usual patty and it has a kind of neutral, plus, it’s dog friendly. Add a selection of tasty toppings and the burger goes from doggy delicious to totally tasty for humans!

Black Bean Turkey Burger

Here’s what you need:

1/2 lb. ground turkey

1 can cooked black beans

1 c. cooked brown rice

½ c sharp cheddar cheese – shredded

¼ c. chopped cilantro

1 egg

A drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil

Human Toppings – Pick a few of your favourites: Salsa, Sour Cream, Chile Sauce, diced tomatoes, lettuce avocado and/or diced red onion (Remember though, onions are NOT SAFE to feed dogs. Ever.), plus Kaiser rolls to serve the patties on.

In a medium bowl, mash black beans with a fork. Mix in raw ground turkey, cooked rice, cheese and egg.

Form into 4 – patties about 1” thick. (Don’t be tempted to make thicker patties. The turkey on the outside will dry out before you can cook the burger all the way through.)

In a pan over medium-high heat, drizzle your olive oil. Place the patties in the heated pan. Cook patties 6 – 8 minutes per side, until cooked all the way through.

Allow to cool and serve all or part of a plain Black Bean Turkey Burger patty to your favourite pooch. If this is a snack only give a snack size portion to your dog if this is to replace a meal a half of a burger or a whole burger might be more then enough for small dogs a large dog might need two Black Bean Turkey Burger Patties to substitute for a meal.

Place the remaining Black Bean Turkey Burger patties on Kaiser Rolls, top with tasty Mexican Inspired goodies and serve to your favourite humans.

I will making these burgers for my dogs to celebrate New Year’s Day. We always do something special to start the new year off right.

  13. This is so cool. The dog gets to eat what we can eat. Looks real good and Im sure the dog will like it to. Only thing is I wasnt sure if they would eat the beans but their mashed so that will work. Thanks for the reminder about onions and dogs – not everyone knows that. Ahh……does the beans make for a more smelling after effect for the dogs LOL

We eat a lot of turkey burgers as well, in fact we don’t eat regular hamburger. In fact, we just made a turkey burger for our furry kids last night. I’ve never thought of adding black beans and rice to them though. I think that would add nice fiber and keep them more full for longer.

  15. Sounds delicious, I love cilantro, and avacado & salsa on top would be absolutely perfect! You post the best recipes-I never knew foods like this could be pet friendly-thank you! 🙂
