Is Hong Kong Dog Friendly

Is Hong Kong Dog Friendly?

Central Hong Kong Soho

Hong Kong in general is pretty dog friendly. You just wouldn’t really want to have a dog in Central. At least I didn’t feel that it was the best place for them to live. The sidewalks are very narrow and there really isn’t any grass you can get to there for a normal everyday potty walk. But there are so many other places in Hong Kong that have easy access to green areas like the Peak or Stanley on Hong Kong Island (of course you need to be a multi, multi millionaire to afford to live in those areas) so most Ex-Pats and Westerners with families and dogs live in the Outlying areas or in the New Territories where it is a little cheaper and you are out of the city. I am not saying city living is impossible with a dog it would just need to be a really even tempered dog that doesn’t mind a lot of people around all the time. There are tons of green spaces on Hong Kong that you can get to pretty quickly from almost anywhere on the Island. You just have to be able to walk to get there unless you have a car of your own because taxis will not allow loose dogs in the car so no big dogs in Taxis (at least the ones I came across).

Discovery Bay

Discovery Bay – there are also trails on the mountain that you can take your more adventurous dogs.

Is Hong Kong Dog Friendly? – Check out Discovery Bay!

We lived in Discovery Bay which is SUPER dog friendly. We had a park across the street from our apartment that Davinia and Indiana played in every day with children and other dogs. There are several areas within Discovery Bay with open space and grass that dogs and children play in together it just depends on which neighborhood in Discovery Bay you live in. Most of Discovery Bay is walking distance so not really an issue and with so little traffic (it is a green community and the only private vehicles allowed are golf carts) you can walk your dog pretty much anywhere in the community no matter their size, activity level, or their need for personal space.

We also went on long walks around the community. Sometimes just around other neighborhoods within Discovery Bay and sometimes to get to other open areas to play. The open space near Sienna with the Koi ponds was a big hit. There is a separate play area for children and then the open space with the pond for everyone to enjoy. Technically your dog can go in the water but I would advise against it because the Koi (and other water creatures that find their way in there think pet turtles and other fish) are left to their own devices to keep the water clean. Davinia and Indiana did drink the water a few times and were fine but again I don’t think it should be a regular thing.

Dogs were allowed in the Plaza area at the tables in the center and at some of the first floor restaurants as long as you sat outside. There was a tie out place in front of the grocery store for dogs (I never used it but I hung out with some dogs I knew while their owner was shopping if I happened to see one when I walked by on my way somewhere else). Dogs were allowed on the community buses if they were in a carry bag and not disturbing anyone. They are allowed to be loose if you call the hire car to take you from your apartment to the plaza (for vet visits or coming back from a hike in the mountains or visit to Mo Wo etc) They go in the back of the vehicle. Even though dogs aren’t allowed on the beach on festival days I did see a few dogs hanging out with their owners.

There is a vet in the community. I don’t know how he compared in price to taking your dog out of the community but I am not sure how much you would save gong elsewhere between transportation costs and time. In my opinion you are better off creating a relationship with the most local vet in case of accident or injury anyway. Plus we did bump into the vet while we were on walks once in a while so he got to see the dogs outside of his office in a none stressful environment so he could better access any issues they did have.

There is a Pet Store in Discovery Bay that also offers grooming services. The pet store sells basic supplies like food imported from countries all over the world so you are sure to find a brand you know or at least have heard of to feed your dogs. They sell some treats again imported from all over the world. And for playful dogs who need a constant supply of new toys they did offer an array of chew bones some stuffed animals balls and other fun things.

Have you lived somewhere that you thought was extremely pet friendly?

    Great story. Happy Halloween!

  3. I think Singapore is generally friendly… but they have a limit on how many you can own if you live in an HDB – which is one… I think that is dumb. The laws protecting animals and punishing offenders is not as good as I would like it to be, sadly…

    • I know the laws in Singapore are pretty strict with size and numbers. There were two dogs that lived in the big apartment buildings with a dog nanny because their family was living in Singapore and being Golden Retrievers they couldn’t be there. The children came to visit the dogs every few months for school holidays. Their father had to be in Singapore for his career but they obviously were not giving up their dogs so they found something that worked for them. So for a few thousand dollars a month the dogs stayed in Hong Kong.

  4. This is an amazing post and great pics! I would have thought it overcrowded and scary for your pets. But, looks like it was pretty decent!.

  5. I guess I am so new to dog ownership that I just never think of taking my dogs places with me, I really need to find pet friendly places near me… because I know there are a ton!

  6. When I visited a small town in England they seemed dog friendly. I can remember going to the park once and seeing a man out playing with his dog as his kids sat on a bench watching. It was very obvious that his man was very dog friendly.

  7. You know the only place that I have gone FAR from hom is Europe {Malta and Sicily to be exact} and I didn’t really pay close attention to how Pet-Friendly they were. BUT a place close to home, Whistler, BC {Canada – where the Winter Olympics were just held} is EXTREMELY pet friendly. I love it. We are actually going back there in a few weeks for some R&R.

In general, I think the US is one of the most tolerant (pet wise); we have many structured government sponsored pet parks to interact with other animals, and strict leash laws to protect other pet owners and pets….I have to say, here in So. Cal it would be a very odd day not to see a pup with their owner wherever I go! (All size breeds, too)

  12. In Holland, they are pretty dog friendly too. You can even bring yiur pets in some restaurants.

  14. I thought those people hated animals. It’s good to know they don’t.

  15. My brother suggested I may like this web site. He was once entirely right. This put up actually made my day. You cann’t imagine just how much time I had spent for this information! Thanks!

  17. We have lived in Tung Chung for many years and it is very pet friendly however different flats have different restrictions. There is a large pet park behind the estate. A vet and a pet supply store as well as the ASPCA visiting weekly. There are also pet sitters and a pet friendly park in the estate. Owners must follow HK rules regarding leashes. Some times there are pet meet ups and field trips for owners/pets. I’ve seen dogs in the mall in pet backpacks and strollers. There is a large sidewalk around the estate and it also has dog waste cans every so often. People who walk pets are expected to clean up waste and dilute urine, most people do. The inside doggy potty is available. The estate has noise rules which are enforced so teach the dog not to bark or get a sitter.
