Cooking for Dogs – Oatmeal Pumpkin Cookies
I’ve been craving cookies lately.
Not store bought cookies. No, no. I want hot, gooey soft cookies right from the oven along with a tall glass of milk. Even though I’ve been craving them for weeks, I never made them. You see, I’m the only (human) at my house that eats cookies. My other half isn’t much into the desserts. He likes candy or ice cream, but he’s not a fan of baked good. (Weird, I know. I have no idea how we ended up together.) If I made cookies, I would have to eat the entire batch by myself.
Unless I made cookies that were dog friendly.
The good thing about my dogs is that they’re always ready to eat cookies. With that in mind I set out to make tasty cookies with the spicy, comforting flavours of fall that both I and the pups could enjoy. I have to admit, the first batch was a miserable failure, but the second batch was pretty darn tasty!
Here’s what you need to make our Oatmeal Pumpkin Cookies
2/3 c coconut flour
1 cup quick cooking oats
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
1 ½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ginger
½ tsp cloves
1/3 c. honey
4 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. canned pumpkin
1 c. dried cranberriesHuman version add-on:
½ c. butter
½ c. brown sugar
Preheat oven to 350F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
In a bowl, mix together coconut flour, oats, baking powder, soda & spices. Set aside.
Beat the eggs until fluffy. Pour in honey, pumpkin & vanilla. Slowly stir in dry ingredients. Mix in dried cranberries.
Divide batter evenly into two bowls. Take the first d\bowl and drop it by the teaspoonful onto the cookie sheet.
Cream together butter and brown sugar. Stir into the remaining batter. Drop teaspoons of batter onto another cookie sheet. (Make sure you keep track of which is which!)
Bake for 15 – 25 minutes or until brown around the edges & firm in the middle.
Cool & serve.
Just like that. A tasty treat for pups & people.
What’s your favourite kind of cookie? Is it dog friendly? Could it be modified and used as a Cooking for Dogs Recipe?

Looks good…of course most of your recipes do.
My MIL just made these for me this weekend for my bday, delicious!
These sound FANTASTIC! I’m a big fan of oatmeal cookies (no raisins, so they’re dog friendly as long as there’s no chocolate chips in them) and plain sugar cookies. Sometimes I’ll even make chocolate chip cookie dough without the chips, which is also dog friendly haha.

I am interested. What ruined the first batch that you corrected in the second? Why is the sugar only for the human cookies? Do dogs not do well with sugar or is it just unnecessary for them?

I had too much sugar in the first batch and they burnt to a crispin. In general, sugar is an ingredient that should be avoided in dog treats, as it’s unnecessary. The extra calories aren’t good for humans, but for dogs who are generally a lot smaller, those extra calories really put them at risk for weight gain and they can aggravate the blood sugar. I try to avoid them as much as I can. Plus, in a side by side comparison, my dogs prefer the unsweetened version.

My dog will eat anything. I don’t cook specifically for him, but he gets the last bite of nearly everything I eat.

Actually I think I’ll be trying out the ones for the dogs as I try and keep my sugar in take down and would rather just use the honey like you have here. The sound yummy so thanks for the recipe.

My dogs have always loved pumpkin, it’s great for digestion, raw- I wonder if it has equal benefits in cooked form? I bet these are tasty either way!
Yup since it’s the fiber that aids in digestion, these will be great BUT since there isn’t much in there it may not be good for those “emergency” times when some one has a bad tummy. In that case, you’re best to go with a strat up scoop of pumpkin.

Let us know if you make them!
Neat idea! Never thought to give a dog cookies before 🙂 and they always seem to want what we’re eating so it’s awesome that you included an add in for a human version! Thanks!
These sound good! My husband love Pumpkin everything, so I want to give these a try! Thanks for sharing!!
This recipe sounds good. I bet if I made this for my 2 dogs they would be soooo excited. Thanks for posting this recipe I may just have to try this out.
I wish I could make these right now! I have to shop tomorrow, I’m an awful cook, but I’m determined to give these a try, thanks for the great recipe and the detailed instructions (I’ll need them) 🙂
Some dogs will eat almost anything. But your page shows us many different recipes that I would not think of feeding the dog. I have noticed that dog food is changing , there are more vegetable and such in them then before. Thanks for the great ideas and recipes for the dog
These are healthy cookies because of the Oatmeal and Pumpkin in them. I like these cookies, and I bet my dog would love them too. Wow, that is funny that your other half does not like cookies. I love them ! Thanks for an awesome recipe!
Love the idea of cookies for humans and dogs. My little girl loves pumpkin. Needlesstosay, she has been happy with the holiday season being right now. Lots of pumpkin! Can’t wait to try this. It sounds so warm and delicious!
anything butwheat flour as many dogs are allergic to wheat.
Would be nice to make the recipes “PRINTABLE”!!!!! MY SHELTIE’S WOULD LOVE THESE COOKIES!!!! THEY ARE HEALTHY ALSO..
Sorry, I will back track, I saw the print icon. Thank You. My babies will love these cookies, better than going to a pet store for little treats.
