Travel with Dogs

About 15-20 years ago, just me and my dog Smokey took a week-long vacation. We took a road trip from Texas to Arizona. As a single female, I felt quite safe with my big black dog around. Smokey took good care of me. Smokey was basically very friendly but he was one of those dogs that was able to somehow sense badness in certain people. There was one incident with an older man who was trying to hit on me. He casually asked questions about whether I was traveling with family, basically trying to find out if I was traveling alone… It was all very creepy. But it ended well when he asked about Smokey, who was standing obediently at my side. The man asked if my dog was friendly and if he could pet him. I said yes but Smokey had different ideas. The hackles on the back of his neck sprung up and a low but intense rumble came from his throat. Needless to say, the man said a quick goodbye and left.

On our trip to Arizona, we stopped in Tuscon where Smokey sat in front of a Cactus that was probably two stories high. We hiked in Sedona where Smokey also went swimming and investigated a huge tarantula. We went to Window Rock to visit the Navajo Nation. Then we went to the Grand Canyon. I wanted to hike below the rim of the Grand Canyon but dogs are not allowed below the rim. So we satisfied ourselves with walking along the edge.

I took lots of photos on this Arizona trip. But it was before I had a digital camera so most of the ones with Smokey didn’t come out well. He looks like a big black blob.

  1. I love Arizona and so does my dog. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I’d like to add that this was the best vacation EVER. This was years ago, in the mid 1990s, and Smokey has since passed away. I miss my hiking buddy. ❤
