New Animal Facility for JFK Airport

New Animal Facility at JFK a step in the right Direction for Animal Care

This picture of Indiana was taking a few days before flying to Hong Kong. I don’t have any pictures of them in their big crate that they flew to Hong Kong in.

John F. Kennedy International Airport is to get a state-of-the-art animal facility appropriately named the ARK, which at times is sure to resemble Noah’s ark with all of the animals that have to come and go through the building before or after international travel. When we think about animal travel we generally think of dogs and cats getting transported to their new homes but all sorts of animals are transported both domestically and internationally and need to see the vet on duty before being allowed in the country. The new animal facility is going to be 172,165 square-foot center will operate 24 hours a day and will handle about 70,000 domestic and wild animals annually. I honestly don’t remember much about the facility at JFK other then being completely stressed out that I needed to go and get another stamp on Davinia and Indiana’s paperwork when we flew to Hong Kong.

Commissioners for the Port Authority of New York and Jersey approved plans for the new animal facility last Thursday. The ARK will offer a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, animal daycare services and more efficient ways to transport animals worldwide, including exotic species. The center will also include a three-day equine quarantine area, dog and cat kenneling and grooming services, an aviary, lawn space for exercising animals and a veterinary hospital and rehabilitation center for horses and other large animals. Right now there are talks with Cornell Veterinary School to not only consult on the project but to be in charge of the hospital. I think having the connecting to the Veterinary School would be a step up in making the facility more friendly and caring where before it was very sterile ok not sterile because it was drab outdated and devoid of emotion but lifeless at least the area that I saw it felt like a cargo area.

  1. It’s about time. Transiting JFK with animals can be maddening.

  2. I just visited my parents on Long Island for the weekend and while I was at JFK waiting for my flight home, over the PA they kept reminding people that across from the Jet Blue terminal, Jet blue opened a Pet relief and play area if your pet needs to go outside. You have to get re-screened by security when you come back in but if your flight gets delayed, its nice that they give you an area where you can hang out with your doggies! I didnt know about the new animal facility though – sounds pretty cool!
