Dog with Megaesophagus

Megaesophagus is an enlarged esophagus that doesn’t allow food to move down into a dogs like it’s supposed to. A dog with Megaesophagus has to sit upright to eat, drink water, have treats, she has to be in an upright position or her body rebels. To help Starship enjoy and properly digest the four to five small meals she eats a day (she has to be served in small portions), Greenville County Animal Care in South Carolina, where she is currently living built her a special high chair to help the food go down easier and train her to stay upright. Starship a loveable Australian Cattle dog-Shepard puppy mix has a temporary foster mom who has worked with her since she was a puppy to get her used to being fed in the chair. Her foster mom says she is about ready for a new high chair as she has started to grow now that she is better able to digest food.

Starship’s exact age is unclear because her condition and inability to digest food to get proper nutrients have severely stunted her growth. She was taken in by the shelter on the 30th of June as an active puppy, at least four weeks old. She’s at least four months old now and even though she is able to eat and digest the food now none of her adult teeth have come in yet.

She is currently up for adoption to the right home that will continue to work with her and help her overcome her lifelong condition.

Wikipedia Megaesophagus is a condition in humans, cats and dogs where peristalsis fails to occur properly and the esophagus is enlarged. Normally, when the animal’s esophagus is functioning properly, it acts as a muscle and pushes the food down the esophagus into the stomach. However, when an animal has megaesophagus, the esophagus stays enlarged and does not push the food down to the stomach. Therefore, the food fails to enter the stomach and often stays in the esophagus, and is eventually regurgitated, or enters the lungs through breathing, or decays in the esophagus.

  3. That poor little puppy! But it’s also very cute! Can nothing be done to treat the condition? I’m glad they at least found out she can get better nutrition by sitting in a high chair.
