Viral No-Kill LA Dog Rescue Video

viral no-kill dog rescue video

Last year more than 17,000 healthy and treatable pets were killed in Los Angeles. NKLA, or No-Kill Los Angeles, is a coalition of increased adoption and spay/neuter efforts throughout the Los Angeles area led by Best Friends Animal Society. The NKLA program is designed to stop the killing of homeless pets in Los Angeles city animal shelters within five years, allowing other cities to believe that this dream is possible.

The LA City Council Tuesday voted 11-1 in favor of banning stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits that are not rescues. The measure is part of an effort to increase adoptions as one step in a multi-pronged effort to make LA a “no-kill city.” So many people have a stigma and don’t want to go to a shelter because they think they are all sad and dirty and horrible places. But if the animals are in malls or storefronts, people seem to think that those dogs and cats are cute and want to take them home on site.

In addition to this attempt to increase adoptions, the city council is working with local non profits to offer mobile low-cost spay and neutering and to increase pet micro-chipping so that lost pets can be returned to owners. Los Angeles has created many pet focused laws this year including allowing residents to register their pets online for their license.

This is not your typical adoption video. The message is powerful and inspiring and I think that it speaks to a population that probably doesn’t feel connected with most shelter videos.

What do you think of the video?
