Men Love Dogs Too

Let me honest upfront – I am a cat person.

I grew up with them. I love their sassy, “I am the lord of all I survey” attitude. Odd I know. And nothing beats having a cat snuggled in your lap as you study for an exam.

And yet an unexpected thing happened to me as an adult. I fell in love with dogs too. No one was more surprised than me. It’s not that I didn’t like dogs. From what I had seen from afar growing up, they looked like warm, caring, utterly devoted pets who would make anyone’s life richer.

I got that part. What I didn’t realise was how much more rewarding it when you get to experience it for yourself. How heartwarming it is to have a pet that comes running every time you come in the door. That rushes to greet you, tail wagging, so eager to see you that they almost trip over themselves to get to you when you get home. You can’t buy that kind of unqualified love and devotion, and it was wonderful to watch it action.

Admittedly it was intermittent since I don’t own a dog myself and I was living vicariously through my friends’ dogs. But during the times I spent with them, I realised that dogs bring so much to your life. My friend Ellen who has had a number of adorable dogs in the time I have known her, is a great case in point.

JESSIE

Her dogs are an integral part of her life. When I first met her, I also got to know the delightful twosome of Oscar and Rascal, a blue Kelpie and an energetic Terrier. I remember walking in her door for the first time and having these two bundles of energy surge past their owner, and rush to greet me. Boy, were they enthusiastic! Not being used to such a fervent greeting from my pets – when was the last time you saw a pet cat rush to greet anyone? – I recoiled a little as Oscar leapt up to say hello, and Rascal danced merrily around my feet.

But as I spent more time at Ellen’s, and hence with Oscar and Rascal, I grew to love, almost crave their exuberance. It made me ridiculously happy. And watching them sigh with unmitigated pleasure when I rubbed their tummies? Absolutely priceless.

NELSON

Seeing the devotion of Oscar and Rascal to Ellen, and not simply, it must be noted, just when it was meal time, impressed on me the purity of love dogs have for their owners. They’re not just meal tickets for these furry bundles of fun; their owners are the reason they dash from their kennels in the morning. They’re the reason they rush for the front door the moment they hear a key in the lock. They absolutely without a shadow of a doubt LOVE their owners.

It was a revelation seeing it up close and personal when I had previously only been exposed to it through movies or TV shows. Sadly Oscar and Rascal have gone to that big dog run in the sky, but Nelson and Lucky, the new dogs in Ellen’s lives are as just as enthusiastic about life. All of these furry friends taught me that dogs weren’t faking it when they earned the sobriquet of everyone’s best friend.

Of course if I am anywhere near any cats when you repeat that back to me, I will disavow all knowledge of having written those words. I love them dearly but you know how cats can be…
