Tinseltown: Home of the movies, where dreams are made, where magic becomes reality, where thousands of starry-eyed hopefuls go to become waitresses and carpenters. Of course that’s not what they have in mind when they go, but that’s how it ends up for ninety nine out of every hundred.

Olivia was filming. A “historical, epic romance, set against the backdrop of a world torn asunder” according to the studio rep I spoke to: “Some chick-flick in big frocks” according to the carpenter that gave me directions.

It was easy to find her trailer, I just had to walk upstream against the flow of harassed looking make-up girls and dressers, until I came to the door with the biggest star on.
I knocked politely. A moment later the door flew open:
“G…”
“How often do I have to tell you people? No signatures, no pictures, no souvenirs, and if you want a public appearance, talk to my agent. Now buzz off, creep.”
The door slammed shut.
I jumped at the noise, and fought down the urge to run and hide. I’m not good with loud noises. Except barking of course.

I leaned forward and raised my voice slightly: “Am I to understand, Miss Olivia, that you would not be interested in giving an interview for ‘Dogue’ magazine?”

From behind the door came the small frantic sounds of a lady adjusting her appearance and her attitude. When the door opened again I found myself staring into a smile so bright that I could feel my fur fading in the glare.
“Darling! Why didn’t you say so. I’ve always got time for Dogue. Come in, come in.”

Olivia carefully arranged herself carelessly on a chaise-lounge.
“So what can I tell my favourite magazine?” she asked sweetly.
“Well Miss Olivia..”
“ ‘Livi’, darling, please.”
“Well, Livi, I’m currently preparing a piece on charities. I believe you recently attended an event hosted by Queen Bumble, in aid of Human Rehoming charities?”
“Absolutely. I do so adore humans. They are so cute with their…”, the smile flickered briefly as she struggled to think of something lovable about humans, “…their warm, dry noses, and funny little ears.”
“Been to many of Bumble’s events?”
“This was my first, darling, but I’m looking forward to more.”
“Good publicity, I suppose?”
“Oh yes.” There was another flicker in the spotlight of her smile, as she realised what she had just said “Though that’s not why I go of course. It’s all about the humans, really. And meeting people.”
“Like Cashy Nova, for instance?”
“Oh Cashy and I are already great friends,” again, there was a telling interruption to the smile, “in fact we’re hoping to do a movie together soon.”
“Really?”
“Well, obviously we’re in the early stages at the moment. There are a lot of things still to be sorted out.” I guessed that telling Cashy Nova was still one of them, but it seemed tactful not to mention it. Tact is my middle name, even if I spent my first few years thinking it was “Stop That”

“Anyway, Miss … Livi …, what are your thoughts about the hostess, Queen Bumble?”
“Queenie? Why she’s adorable. Such a doll, such a beauty, for her age.”
“I gather she was wearing her Faberge collar on the night of the party.”
“Oh the sapphires.” A dreamy look came into Olivia’s eyes, “Yes she was.”
“Quite a piece of jewellery, I’ve heard?”
“Oh it is Mr…?”
“Call me Ben.”
“It is, Ben, it’s fabulous. You’d think it would look gaudy on someone that tiny, but it is gorgeous.”
“Something you’d like to own?”
She let out a laugh that I don’t mind admitting sent a shiver from my tail to my ears, it wasn’t difficult to see why she had the guys falling at her feet.
“Of course I’d love it, what woman wouldn’t, but I’m going to have to make a hell of a lot more films before I can afford to get my paws on something like that.” The million-and-one candlelight smile suddenly faded, as she remembered she was meant to be giving an interview, “but that’s not why I’m in this business, of course, I do it because I love the movies. And my fans.
“And humans.” she added, for good measure.

Fortunately the awkward silence was broken by a voice from outside the trailer, telling Olivia that she was needed on set. Her smile returned as she apologised for having to draw our interview to a close.

“Well, thank you for your time, Miss Livi. I mustn’t keep you any more.”
“It’s been my pleasure.”
I turned towards the door, then turned back.
“Just one thing, a personal favour, if I may?”
“Name it, Ben.”
“I was wondering if I might trouble you for a signed photo for a friend of mine. Actually she’s Queen Bumble’s maid. You may remember her from the party?”

“Of course I do,” Livi replied, her smile slipping momentarily, “lovely girl, she was the little puffer girl, right?”
“Actually she is a blonde, hairless.”
“Of course. The gangly gr…the tall girl” I had the feeling there was one perfect shape in Livi’s world, and I was looking at it.

Her smile returned to retina scorching levels, only to falter again at the next statement, “You know, her name is right on the tip of my tongue, but for the life of me…”
“Charm.” I had the feeling I could have replied anything from Rover to Gelert and she wouldn’t have batted an eyelid.

She pulled a promotional photo from a pile on her desk, and wrote ‘To Charm, my number one fan, love Olivia’ with a well practised hand. Idly I wondered how many hundreds of number one fans had identical photos.

Thanking Olivia profusely, I made my exit, and set off to find the home of Cashy Nova.

The Dog Behind The Case of the Sapphire Collar

Olivia the Chinese Crested
Beautiful, healthy, happy and well loved, Olivia is a shining example of a pedigree show dog from a good breeder.

Regular readers of this blog will be sadly familiar with the horrors of bad breeders, but Olivia is a beautiful reminder that there are still breeders out there who are motivated by their love of the dogs, rather than any monetary concerns.

  1. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find
this matter to be actually something which I think I would
never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me.
I’m looking forward for your next post,
I will try to get the hang of it!
