Men Love Dogs Too – Cardboard Box Fun

Men love dogs too… Cardboard boxes can be fun!

cardboard box fun

We’ve recently had to deal with the problem of separation anxiety with Luna. She escaped three times in the one day a couple of weeks ago; luckily she was returned safe and didn’t get herself into too much trouble. We’ve now puppy proofed the yard (again) and are now looking for ways to keep her entertained whilst we are away. Someone at obedience training recommended a cardboard box to keep her amused, that is, as long as you don’t mind cardboard all over your yard!

Sure enough, the first time we put a very large cardboard box outside in the yard, we got home to discover that she had been happily shredding the box all day! So I decided to make it a bit more interesting for her and thought I would share this little idea with everyone!

Cardboard Box Fun!

1. Find a clean, medium sized cardboard box… (Disclaimer: You have to be comfortable with your dog playing with cardboard. Of course, there are dangers to playing with anything and they may accidently ingest some, but if you follow these instructions and put some toys and treats inside they should hopefully just rip it apart!)
2. Make sure it doesn’t have any sticky tape or anything sharp on it and then close up one side
3. Spray the box with some chicken or beef stock (this makes it smell good and especially for Luna means she wants to play with it)
4. Put some of their favourite toys inside, we will also put some food treats and maybe a marrowbone inside as well
5. Take the box outside, put it on the ground and enjoy the carnage!

I do this just before we are about to leave so Luna has something to occupy her mind just after we are gone. She approaches the box as if it’s something completely new, and tries to discover how to get inside; it’s great to see her mind at work!

What do you to help keep your pets entertained whilst you are gone?

  1. Looks like a grand old time! LOLOL We need to recommend this activity to mamas. 🙂

  2. How adorable. We have a beagle terrier mix. We have the same worry in our yard because beagles are always on the search for something, and my dog is always trying to chase a bunny who dug a little hole the fence and I worry all the time that my dog will get out. Great pictures…

  4. What an easy inexpensive way to keep your dog busy. Great idea 🙂
