Men Love Dogs Too – The question of knowledge

Dog Looking Out the Window

Men Love Dogs Too – The question of knowledge…

So it seems, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that gets this, that because I’ve started working at a shelter and I’m a Dog Blogger, that I’m suddenly the go-to guy when it comes to dogs, or social media. Suddenly I’m the expert on training, which dog breed to get, where I can get this dog from, or how can I get a job like yours?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with it, it’s just interesting. What’s also interesting is that a lot of people go into owning a pet without doing much research into it at all, hence why a number of animals end up in shelters. I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m always scouring the Internet, hanging on trainers every words and checking out blogs and other sites to learn as much as possible.

When we had our one-on-one with a dog trainer for the first session at our training school he was at a loss as to what to say to us. Why? We had done our research. Generally they have to cover all the basics first, such as feeding, toilet training etc. The way I see it, owning an animal is like having a child, you are responsible for a life, shouldn’t you do your research beforehand?

Take my personal trainer for instance, he wants to get a dog, so he has asked me to keep a look out for him. I have no issue with doing this, but it’s interesting that he seems to want his dog as a training partner, but not just running, jogging or swimming, but full on training! I’m talking, weights, pulling, etc.

When you first got your animal, what were your reasons behind it? Did you do your research beforehand?

Thanks for reading! See you next time!

  1. I must admit this last dog we got, we did no research on her. Actually she followed my husband home one day. My husband was out walking and along game MaJo (thats what we named her).

She is a 13 week Beagle (now, she was only 10 wks when we got her). I have had to do a lot of research because we knew nothing about Beagles.

  2. Thank you for sharing. I think you nailed it, people don’t put the time into determining why they want a dog, what type of dog might work best for their lifestyle, etc…

And yet when they describe the problems they experience with their pet, they are often training issues or something that is a direct result of the way that they care for the dogs (i.e. not walking/exercising the dog enough, not providing the dog with stimulation).

I currently have 3 dogs and what we refer to as the “herd” of cats. The first animal I adopted was a cat. At the time, as much as I loved dogs, it wasn’t practical to adopt one because of work schedules and living arrangements. As we’ve adopted more over the years, we have taken into consideration the amount of space we have, the amount of time we can dedicate to care, etc… I don’t think anyone should blindly go into pet parenting!

  3. I was a child when I got my first dog, so my parents made the decision for me. I loved it like it was my child. However, now that I’m an adult with my own kids, we have not been able to have a dog because I’m now allergic to most of them. We have a lot of dogs in the neighborhood, so the kids are able to get their “fix” that way. LOL

  4. I currently don’t have any pets but have always done my research before taking in adopting so I knew what I was getting into.

  5. I agree. You should definitely do your research. WHen my sister got her dog, she logged in so much time on the internet. She then got the dog trained because he was so wild.

  6. we did some research before we choose our gorgeous baby girl, a chocolate lab. I actually wanted a smaller dog but my husband wanted a big one. We liked the golden retriever as well but worried about all that hair in the house. needless to say labs create quite a big of hair themselves lol We’ve had her for 9 years though, so i think we’ll keep her! lol

  7. I completely agree that you should do your research before buying any animal for a pet. We have a dog, but I admit I knew pretty much nothing about dogs. I wanted a cat, but my husband is allergic, so he thought a dog would be a good idea. She is super sweet, and still a bit active even as she gets older, but I really do think I should have learned more about dogs before we committed to having one. Thanks for the post.

  8. a lot went into finding my pit bull motley…i honestly wanted a bull dog at first but that dog would not thrive well in my enviornment…we are always on the go and around many people so i needed a friendly dog that could keep up with all the adventures we came across…many think pit bulls arnt friendly but like you said, if you do the research and prepare yourself, these dogs love they human counterparts like no other.i love the choise I made…and Im a guy that loves dogs!!!!

  9. Love your story and especially the adorable beagle pictured, since I have a beagle terrier mix. I wanted my dog for company while I work and as my walking partner. I never thought about having her help me with my weight workouts…usually my dog tries to climb all over me and drives me nuts when I try to work out – maybe I should try to have her join in..lol

  10. We do not currently have any pets but if we ever get one we will do tons of research

  11. I always do my research…well I don’t really have to anymore as I am on my third little poodle…and I am a guy. The reason for poodles is because I love dogs but I am somewhat allergic. For some reason poodles don’t really affect my allergies…I guess because they don’t shed hair as badly as other breeds.
