Dog Plays Basketball / Pet Bloggers Blog Hop

basketball dog

Every dog needs some time to play and have fun and be socialized. Socialization does not stop once your dog is no longer a puppy it needs to continue on a daily basis. But it is not necessarily what you might think of as socialization. Yes your dog should be able to interact with other dogs even if that means from opposite ends of the street they should be able to play nicely with at least a few friends. It also means they need to experience different sites and sounds. The thing most people tend to forget is they need to feel different textures under their paws. Non big city dogs often get to just play in the grass or walk on sidewalks or streets that are semi quiet. Big city dogs have to be able to tolerate all sorts of feeling under their paws from the sidewalk to the street maybe gravel at the park and the be all end all grates. Its actually something big city dogs practice in puppy school or at least it is homework. That you find a grate or delivery entrance cover on the sidewalk and make a game out of walking on it and near it. While you might not have access to something like that by taking your dog out for a walk you can help them experience different sensations just by walking on the neighbors driveway it doesn’t have to e up their driveway just a few steps will do and you will be amazed when you think about it how many different types of surfaces your dog walks on by the time you get home again.

In this video of the dog playing with the basketball the dog plays on at least 3 different surfaces the gravel, some grass and dirt, and the driveway. The dog was confident and happy un-bothered by the different feeling under it paws.

They need to experience different kinds of toys and activities in order to keep their minds active and their bodies in shape. While this dog obviously loves to run and play with a Basketball some dogs might prefer to watch little children play with the ball instead. Just being near the children is fun and exciting. Others just need a toy with a different texture. Remember just like dogs need to experience different sensations under their paws they need to experience different sensations when it comes to play.
